Child of Light is a fairytale-inspired RPG with modest exploration and puzzle-solving elements.

The story is set in the magical world of Lemuria, which is suffering under the rule of an evil Black Queen and her dark creatures which have overrun the land. The main protagonist is a young girl, Aurora. Aurora is the daughter of a duke from 1895 Austria who has found herself separated from her father and whisked away to Lemuria. Aurora must navigate the hazards of this beautiful, but dangerous world in order to return to Austria and reunite with her father.

Without spoiling the story, what I enjoyed the most about Child of Light's plot was that it managed to touch upon critical tropes integral to a fairytale story, while subverting ones which are no longer relevant in modern society. Aurora's adventure is a coming-of-age hero's journey, involving hidden destinies and familial strife. Despite her fear and uncertainty at being in an unfamiliar world, Aurora is no helpless damsel in distress; Aurora is a girl of strong morals and action who helps those in need, and who over the course of the story matures into a strong leader.

The art style evokes nostalgia for watercolored storybooks of childhoods past. Both the character sprites and the backgrounds are simple at first look, and extremely detailed upon closer inspection. The visuals themselves are beautiful and alone make this game a piece of art.

The soundtrack by Coeur de Pirate is a perfect accompaniment to the setting and story -- appropriately whimsical, triumphant, or haunting, as appropriate to the point in the story.

One element of the game that some may be put off by (though personally I enjoyed it) was the use of rhyming iambic verse in nearly all of the dialogue in the story.

All in all, I feel that Child of Light is a truly excellent adventure and well worth the full price of the game and deserving of the 2014 GOTY nomination it received from IGN.
