There are many reasons you should want to play Pentiment, and only a few you might prefer avoiding it.
Fidelity to the alpine medieval setting is incredibly well realised, as most have already pointed out, with the addition of a very enjoyable soundtrack that contributes to an overall amazing atmosphere, which adds a lot to the way the core of the game, the story, moves forward.
In an ocean of games where choices matter, but actually don't, but sometimes do, but in fact still don't, I found Pentiment to go for the inverse approach of, they don't matter, but actually they do. You might get the impression that you had few options in going about something, before spending the next few hours reading about how they affected others. The game is much more about characters, how they interact with one another, and in which ways they allow you to contribute to their lives.
There are at times frustrating elements to the options at your disposal, particularly if you feel as if you have a better solution at hand, but I thought the game did a reasonable job of reminding you how limited your character actually is, especially as an outsider to Tassing/Kiersau. This is made even better by the fact that dialogue and overall writing is fantastic, although the entire game focuses on reading, which might be deterring for some.
A few of the out-of-dialogue mechanics aren't always very compelling, and can at times feel more like chores than anything else, but they are few and far between, and quickly forgotten as the narrative moves forward.
All in all, I would wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who does not mind playing text-heavy games.
