The Long Dark

You are alone. Freezing to death stranded in the Canadian wilderness. You've only taken in 400 calories since last night, the sun is high in the sky, your stomach pains have been replaced with empty numbness that scares you even worse. Everything is numb. It's freezing. You had to tear up your socks to make bandages after you were attacked by a starving wolf, you can't feel your feet. You trudge forward following an abandoned railroad track hoping to see some sign of life. A small train depot comes into focus in the distance. Hope. Two howls break the stillness, you trace the sound to two sets of eyes in the trees. You spark your last flare and sprint toward salvation.

The Long Dark is drowning in atmosphere. No gimmicks. Just you and the wilderness. I've been following this game through it's lengthy beta and the wait has been worth it, the devs are steadily adding new content and developing the campaign mode, though the base survival is still my favorite. It's nuts how engaging this game makes trudging through the snow and rummaging through abandoned properties for hours on end. The subdued soundtrack and deep ambience mixed with simple but bright, and often eerily beautiful, graphics compliment the anxious slog toward your inevitable death. I always want to try one more time, make it a little bit longer. If you are a fan of survival games you need this in your library.

Consider nominating this game for the ''Labor of Love'' category. The devs put a lot of time and work into making it and it shows.
