Early Access Review
Obviously still in development but well worth what I paid. Looking forward to multiplayer, which is when I think it'll really shine. In the meantime, very fun lonely mindless base/survival game.

If the gameplay and vibes of Stardew Valley and all the settlement features Fallout 4 SHOULD have had got together and had a baby that looked like TESIV:Oblivion, it would be this game. 10/10; there's a bit of a learning curve (especially, ironically, for experienced survival builderists - the game is a LOT kinder on you in the first year than I was prepared for, and I was genuinely confused/frustrated for a couple of seasons because I expected it to be *less* forgiving than it is) and there's the expected amount of clunk, but all of it is made up for by surprisingly deep gameplay and unexpected but welcome moments of real cleverness and humor in the dialogue.

NOTE for the content warning / trigger warning I wish game developers and Steam bothered with: There is casual (and, in my opinion, not sensitively handled) story reference to both sexual assault and miscarriage/child death in the early stages of the unskippable main quest (described as events in the past that happened to NPCs, not the PC).

Great story, and physically one of the most satisfying psuedo-haptic shooter experiences out there.

This game (even on the Story mode, even on the easiest setting), while it makes a laudable effort to be accessible, suffers from an unpleasant artificial difficulty: The UI is unintuitively designed relative to similar entrants in the genre, which would be fine and great except that there is basically nothing in the way of tutorial/explanation to show you how to use the game's systems or even interpret some of the HUD. After 7 hours (and a lifetime on survival builders, it's my favorite genre of game), I only feel like I "mostly" understand the information presented - not ideal for this genre, where the difficulty should be *the difficulty*, not the UX! Other than that, though, this is a beautifully presented example of the genre, and I have basically no complaints about the game itself. It's scary and difficult where it should be, and cozy and aesthetic and even creepy and weird the rest of the time. Absolutely five stars out of five, but be prepared for a couple hours of irritation while you get comfortable if you're as sensitive to crappy UI/UX as I am.

If Eco and the settlements from Fallout 4 had a baby, and that baby was a viking, it would be Valheim. There's no possible way for me to be objective about this game because it presses every button I have when it comes to what I want in this game. If you like this kind of game, you'll love this game.

I started with FO3 and clocked a few hundred hours in it and FO4. Finally convinced by friends to try out NV and while everything you've heard about it is true, the good stuff is as true as the bad. If you like Fallout, you'll like this.
