I think this game is best represented by the Resolve check mechanic. It is this singular aspect that concentrates the entire core design of everything about Darkest Dungeon. Having been pushed to the limit of stress, the time comes. The banner flashes. "Your heroes Resolve is tested...". The pause, the tension. What will happen? Will your hero give in to the stress of these terrible, unfeeling circumstances? Will he be broken by the cruelties of the harsh reality he finds himself in? Or, in just the slimmest margin, will he rise to the challenge. Will he become Virtuous, Focused, Powerful, Stalwart. "All in to formation and we are made Invincible!" It is this game-defining moment that speaks to the player and asks them the same question. Will you break to the RNG, the cruelties of perma-death, the mind-numbing grind? Or will you lift yourself above these excuses and bend the game to your will. THAT is what makes this game amazing, and the reason I've returned to it time and again. Most see this game as dark, dreary, full of existential terror. And perhaps that is true, to a certain extent. But I see this game as a shining example of the fact that in the darkest hour, heroes can rise to the occasion and accomplish something truly great. The night is dark, and full of terrors. But we are the Flame! And the Dark fears us!
