Inside all of us is a sinful nature that is completely contrary to God's. When a human realizes their sinful state in eyes of God and becomes a bit scared or sad, this is contrition. The fool has said in their heart that their is no God, but the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

Turn from the inward sinful nature, cry out to Jesus the Christ for forgiveness and invite Him into your heart and mind. If sincerely done, you will be born again. Jesus will enter you. You will experience the life changing power of the Holy Spirit take away the weight of sin that we as unbelievers don't even realize we bear till that moment of belief in Christ. Go from unbelief to belief.

By faith we are saved because of the gift of God's grace, not good works lest people become boastful.

Turn from sin, place faith in Christ, be born again.
