It's a 20 minute advertisement for a future series. I liked the majority of the spoken lines but they interrupt themselves and endlessly loop if you click too quickly. The three puzzles are follow instructions, use your new tool, and look at the journal.

Though easy and pleasant, I'd be hard pressed to imagine spending money for a longer version of this experience.

A near endless meditative grind. I have completed Warframe 100% in it's entirety several times in the last 3400 hours. The game continues to recieve quality of life improvments with major and minor content infusions over it's incredibly long lifecycle. It has all been entirely free and a relaxing loot gardening experince.

Now if you will excuse me I need to get back to doing kickflips on my space snowboard to earn new clothes for my adopted teen daughter that I found on the moon.

7/10

In the style of Escape Velocity and Privateer you are a faceless space trucker out to investigate the trouble an estranged family member got into.

The game has incredibly stylish visuals and the emptiness of space is genuinely colorful. I like the feel of the navigation & combat as it is locked to a 2D plane and plays much more like a boat or mech game than a 3D simulator. This cuts down on the amount of controls and disorientation that would come with them. The game is generally light on unnecessary details and is an incredibly relaxing experience to tootle around in.

The RPG piece of the game is streamlined as well. There aren’t ships or upgrades I would consider trap options. You can’t get stuck in a slow moving cargo freighter with no guns. Every ship is better than the last and when combined with the arcadey combat is a much more casual and action oriented experience than the many games that proceed it.

The cargo flipping economic sim component is the weakest part of the game. Finding efficient trade routes and running them for cash isn’t exposed properly in the menus to make sound decisions. For the most part you should be shooting evil pirates during missions or in random encounters and just selling whatever they stole. Because all the upgrades are generally positive and cash flow is constant; money effectively equals exp and the game is paced well to provide steady improvement without the feel of grind.

The music is fantastic. In the same vein of StarCraft II terrans you have truckers listening to space country. I think it nails the tone perfectly but if that isn’t your bag you can tie your own custom soundtrack to the audio queues the game uses for seamless transitions.

Edit: I have completed the game and am pleased with the time spent. It does get grindy during the approach to the end of the game as you have likely settled into a favorite loadout. I recommend this game on a steam sale for a relaxing trip through space.

It is a competent Minecraft rip off. The UI is very slightly improved and the art style is comparable. The crafting system is a series of micro achievements to lead you through the tiers in crafting. The menus make it easy to spend resources you have and know what resources you will need. Biomes are more common and contain unique resources for climbing the tiers. The game asks you for $20 every so often but actually hides most of the micro transactions until AFTER you buy in. The game has a multiplayer focus but is quiet and simple to keep to yourself and prevent greifing.

It is Minecraft on steam for free. 10 hour relaxing singleplayer survival and however many more hours being creative.

Free is a great price for a 5-10 minute twilight zone episode. I feel really fortunate to have accidently found this while idley browsing the store. In a world of sub 2 hour $40 indie games I think it is really cool to see Valve publish some guys art out of their own pocket.

I hope this becomes a genre I'd love to see more like it.

With $120 of Early Access free to play DLC I started as a skeptic. Lets try to ignore that elephant in the room and discuss the addictive qualities.

In this grind oriented treasure hunt the loot is unsortable, unsearchable, and miserable to compare.

After two games you will have 50 or so pieces of loot 40 will be drastically inferior 8 will be side grades 1 will be what you are looking for and 1 will be marked as an upgrade despite having awful stats. This drudgery starts immediately and much like the first DD item stats take their time to become relevant in the scale of the game. Items sell for small amounts of gold that is difficult to spend. Shops have 6 items every 15 minutes with a noticeable delay on the tool tip to inspect each item one at a time. Such a small pool of items having a random level requirements means you will never find a usable item let alone a good one.

The tower defense game play is just fine in spite of the above. The primary difficulty is that in a public game you are very likely to be joining a defense in progress with the majority of the limited defense cap already spent. I know it isn't a cooperative game if a bad player can't bring the team down but the current mechanics directly encourage it. Every player gets a build allowance and spending it in good faith will screw over the rest of your team.

It's free it's co-op and it's free. It looks nice even if the extra detail gets in the way of efficient tower placement. As a tedious detail oriented person I feel actively persecuted for attempting to interface with the inventory and stats.

Payday 2 is a retail priced release that was not content complete for $60. It has been an enjoyably grindy engagement loop sold on the promise of a constant fusion of DLC and the missing content that should have been in at launch. This created the player base that got some additional content at a price and the rest a reason to keep playing justifying the investment of the minority buyers.

It was adequate while it lasted.

Promoting the engagement loop above lead to very public condemnations of micro-transactions and other less popular revenue methods. The update this week is a reversal of all of those declarations and a double dip on an already DLC saturated player base. This is taking the separately acceptable arc of TF2 and also charging $20 for every major item update. The exact same crate of "gun hats" goes from an ignorable nuisance to a direct insult on to the folks who purchased at launch and have invested over $100 in a game that is now going FTP.

I didn't DLC. I didn't buy at launch. I still regret paying anything for a game that has now been taken away and replaced with a FTP version of itself.

If all that wasn't enough the above was packaged with a "rebalancing" of the better weapons of the game to reset whoever still doesn't pay to keep them in the revenue loop I outlined at the top. Classy.

Since Master of Orion II I have experienced a few notable contenders that have tried to recapture the same magic. Sword of The Stars, Endless Space, and now StarDrive 2. StarDrive 2 is the closest direct copy with (semi) modern visuals with the majority of its gameplay lifted strait from MOO2. Corn/Hammers/Beakers with Civ style buildings make up the majority of colony management. This is an exact replica only slightly tweaked by the maintenance cost of buildings forcing actual choices (that the AI is unprepared to make). Design wise this comes off as a fan patch that makes sense in the context of MOO2 but has no life of its own.

The stolen content is the best part of the game.

Anything that was not mathematically or superficially lifted from the original is incredibly unpolished. The entire experience is like a house built with only a photograph as a reference. The AI does not know how to design ships or manage its empire, The new ground combat is a tedious slog of looped animations, and the "real time" space battles (though nice looking) are not decided by player commands just the ships you carefully designed. It is reminiscent of gratuitous space battles except because you designed decent ships you can take on 5x the chaff that the AI is stuck with.

I can not recommend this game to anyone who has never played Master of Orion II and even then not at full price. On the outside it looks and feels exactly like the MOO2 you may fondly remember while running on modern hardware. It scratches the itch in a way that irritates as much as it satisfies. At the time I write this the developer is making severe content and balance changes and this game may become a late blooming gem like Sword of The Stars one was. However, the developer ditched fixing StarDrive to make StarDrive2 and the problems above may just get dropped for StarDrive3.

*Breaking news*
$10 DLC to address gameplay shortfalls of an unfinished early access game. Buy now! Buy later! Buy until StarDrive1 is finished in StarDrive4

So I'm going through the turorial and my sidekick who looks to be in her early twenties starts quoting Hayden Cristiensen. I think to myself, Thats strange she dosn't look 14 though, the super heavy eye shadow makes me suspisious. Garret is going to need to card her before anything happends I thought. Hmmmm Garret's voice sounds old but he is saying things a 16 year old would think are stupid. I console my self after deciding the writers were 12.

The side kick is whining about how Obi-wan dosn't understand her. Now she has killed a guard with her claw thing that is clearly an overworld item and I hope to myself she won't need to die for me to get it. We are half way into a dangerous heist and she has a big problem with Garret having a problem with her killing. Mature people would have this argument later or abort. I have enough in my pocket to call it a worthwile trip and these two clearly have history whats the hurry.

The combonation of her current borderline age and the idea that garret knew her even younger has made me uncomfortable. I decide to show solidarity in her murder by hiding all the bodies and knocking out everyone I see. This should drasticaly midigate the effects of her "mistake" and mend the frayed nerves.

I meet her on the roof and she has killed again. Given it is the one part of the roof that was fully lit and there is no place for the gaurd to have gotten up here let alone patrol I doubt she had a choice. Garret confronts her and she pulls a full on dark side monolouge. Woah, must be adreniline. She is probably going to feel a serious guilt hangover later and seems barely stable now. She moves ahead but clearly wants to finish the heist with me and is using the idea of a race to keep her distance but goad me to keep up. Clearly I need to go on for her sake and if she breaks down she might get hurt or killed.

When I start to note that captial P pride will be a big part of her character giant white text appears over her head and she freezes.

STEAL THE CLAW THINGY [E]!

No. Why? I have not seen a single place I needed the claw thing. I don't want the thing. She has clearly grown dependant on it to get arround and to defend herself. It also represents her advantage over Garret psyologicaly. The chip on her shoulder is a mile wide and stealing her tools is a heinous betrayal. Garret was worried about a body up here on the roof so clearly I can't knock her out or strand her here in the middle of a mansion grounds. Garret is not her mentor or guardian they are partners in a now double homicide crime.

My pocket has a month of living jangling in it and a necalce made entirely of rubies. I don't need this. If I am woried about myself I should quit. If I am worried about her I should try to calm her down and make sure she gets through this alive. Its at this point in my crisis that I realize she hasn't moved at all. She is trapped half way through an anamation where she is squeseing past a box. She hasn't said a thing this whole time. She isn't even breathing. It's astounding that there is no speech or falure condition for taking this long. She dosn't react when I shoot water on her head or toss a fragle glass cup.

The only things to keep me company on this roof are a bloodless corpse of a guard, an uncariteristicaly bright light, and a white cursor over her butt displaying:

BETRAY YOUR COMPANION [E]

SCAR HER TRUST [E]

STEAL THE CLAW [E]

I couldn't bring myself to go any farther. I will never know what adventures reboot Garret has in these linear tunnels with 1 to 3 guards at a time.

9.5/10 GOTY "It's astounding..." -Corbec
