Kenchis AKA Cannonfodder

The Good

* IGOUGO and weekly turns make the game manageble and playable for wargamers that are time constrained (personally, I play War in the Pacific: Admirals Edition a lot, a monster with the one day is one turn structure...)
* Not for the faint of heart. It should actually have this printed on the box....
* Very. very detailed OOB and leader database
* Modable to a high degree
* Fun and challenging AI that can be tuned to your level of competence (by giving it bonuses)
* "It is the 26th of June, 1941.. Your infantry smashed through the front line and Panzer Gruppe 2 and 3 just linked up west of Minsk. Infantry are already working on reducing the large pocket formed. Your tanks have fuel but the supply lines are long and the infantry is behind... What do you do, where do you go? YOU are in command...."

The Bad

* The air game is under developed and can be "gamed"
* IGOUGO and weekly turns can leave you wondering "what the hell just happened" in PBEM...
* Supply system is fairly basic and although it does constrain you it does not constrain you enough...
* The combat engine is very detailed and fun to dig in but it does complicate the game. Even the smallest tuning of devices can have large macro effects on the war
* Not for the faint of heart. It should actually have this printed on the box....

The future?

2by3 have used the base War in the East engine to develop War in the West (not available on steam). I've spent some hours in that game and while it introduces some features that are a bit rough around the edges (amphibous invasion, naval aspects, Eastern front box) it shows great promise in other areas (improvements to the supply system, a new air engine).

Conclusion?

When you invest in War in the East, you invest in a good time now but also in the future of a game engine that grognards aka war gaming enthusiasts will enjoy for years to come!
