Basic game play is adorable and straightforward. Cute penguin city builder, it's done well. EXCEPT the progression is honestly borked. To advance, you need to go from being a village to a city to a province etc. However, these jumps are not easy and, even worse, can be reversed if you have a year where you struggle. And while getting to city is relatively easy through the random quests, you cannot self sustain at city level, that is, you cannot self generate needed supplies. So if you get stuck at city level 2 years in a row (which is very easy given how hard it is to be a province), you will likely run out of the supplies necessary to build new buildings to help expand your penguin empire. Furthermore, when you drop a city level, you lose access to the technology tree, so your science points are useless for 45 minutes to an hour depending on the speed of the game.
I really wanted to love this game, but at this point, I would honestly recommend Timberborn for cute animal city builder. I hope they rework some of the game progression, but given that this is full release, I'm not sure they will.

Very cute and simple, no goals, only vibes. Sometimes the potting and picking up is a bit tricky, but not game breaking. Developers are very kind and responsive. A+, will be playing further games for sure.

Early Access Review
I play PvE, this review is only from that side. I think this game had lots of potential, but the difficulty is definitely scaling up as time/versions go on. This is really good for players who are good at the game, but is leaving me behind. So for people who like hardcore survival, this could be great. However, be prepared for some slow unavoidable deaths and penalties for giving up in these situations. Here are two examples: I got jumped by a zombie/puppet mere moments after spawning. This left me with many wounds and no real way to treat them. Though I managed to get to two separate towns with pharmacies, they do not appear to ever spawn antibiotics (I have never gotten them in my other playthroughs either). By the time I was able to get to an outpost, I sold everything I had to get 4 antibiotics, waited 45 minutes IRL to let them work... and still had contamination that would lead to infections and death. In another run, I was dropped in a location that only left me with the option to run to an irradiated zone. I have only found iodide pills in one playthrough and there was no way it would have saved me from the amount of radiation I received. Since the radiation poisoning is also debilitating, death was slow and my character was increasingly useless, so continued exploration was essentially impossible. I estimate that both of these scenarios took 2-3 hours each, which is a lot of demoralizing play time for zero benefit. They have also added a new type of in-game currency which is frankly awful, counter intuitive, and detrimental to the in-game economy. I hope that maybe things will be re-balanced eventually, or maybe just give server owners more control over certain aspects (which could get too confusing). However, it looks like the developers are looking to refine and reduce their ideal player base. So if spending 2-3 hours dying without improving your character, in-game skills, and not developing better tactics sounds appropriately challenging, here's your game.

I'd wanted this for a long time and my friend gifted it to me! The easy mode is a great vibe for super chill gameplay, but does make the limited tech tree more apparent. The normal mode is great to establish the balance between growth and survival. As a relative newb, the hardest part so far is figuring out supply lines, since it feels almost impossible to me to get a viable settlement where the metal deposits are without having dynamite, which requires metal first. Another terraforming option, even if very slow, would be very helpful and logical to me.

The tutorials are not helpful and the doctors don't seem to do their job. Online help forums refer to these as "quirks" of the game, but I don't want to have to bounce between forum posts to learn to play a game that has tutorials in it. Uninstalled.

A simple game to learn with enough added complexity to stay interesting.
