I had a lot of fun until the end game (after completing Anor Londo). All of the areas you find yourself in up to this point are great - whether it be the oppressive nature of Blight Town/Sen's Fortress, or the great looking areas of Darkroot Garden or Undead Parish. The game is truly amazing at the start.

It goes downhill once you start the end game. The areas really lack the charm of the first half of the game minus a couple sections which have great design IMO - Catacombs/Tomb of the Giants, Painted World of Ariamis, and the Crystal Cave are fun.

The rest of the areas really didn't strike me as something I would like to return to.

There is something else to be said about the bosses being easier than later games. This is definitely the case here. This made the areas leading up to the bosses being the star of the show to me and when they weren't the game was basically miserable. Then there was the Bed of Chaos which was just a waste of my life beating because it was miserable. Same goes for the Four Kings.. I just hit them non-stop with my sword until the died (I did think it was cool that I had to beat a previous boss to get an item to fight this boss however).

Anyways this was my third Fromsoft experience (Sekiro/Elden Ring being my first two). Dark Souls has some interesting aspects but it is firmly in the 3rd place as far as Fromsoft's offerings go for me.

I think it is worth playing if you haven't already played it and liked something else from Fromsoft (if for nothing else than to get your own opinion of the game).

Too be honest this game is great so far. 35 hours in and everything looks great/all of the bugs I saw when I played the game at launch are gone. This is played on a PC - I don't have experience with the console versions obviously.

Before even reading further I would suggest that you can run this game at higher settings before you buy it. For me a big reason to play this game is the city its self and if I wasn't able to see all of the details of the city I definitely would wait to play this game.

I still have a LOT of time left to go in the game but I feel like I can at least give a recommendation for the following reasons:
1. I have a need to complete all of the optional quests in an area. In this game it really means: go to area -> kill dudes -> get loot -> make crafting components. There are exceptions but most of the time this is what I am doing. The environments are cool enough to where I want to keep playing.
2. I have had almost zero issues regarding things hurting my immersion in the game - things such as people standing up in their vehicles while it is driving away for example are gone.
3. The amount of content in this game is mind boggling. I get why it took so long to make. Sucks that it had such a rocky release but now I think the game is stable enough to play.
4. I really like all of the main characters that I run into - you feel like each one of them has an angle that they are playing whenever you are talking to them and the voice acting is great imo. That being said I don't find myself all that immersed in the general lore you find all over the place during fetch quests. Really like to just stick to the main quests for the lore of the game. This is a complete 180 in comparison to my enjoyment of Fallout/Elder Scrolls where for some reason I do care about lore in the world and skip the main quest entirely. I think I just prefer the worlds in those games in comparison to a modern city when it comes to being truly immersed in the experience. The main quest in this game is head over heels better than Fallout/Elder Scrolls imo.
5. The amount of skills in this game will force me to play through it more than once to use different types of weapons. I generally like using rifles but would like to check out the melee weapon builds too (the katanas/mantis blades are sick).
6. I was iffy about turning up the difficulty in this game because I really don't like making games like this more difficult. I will be turning it up the difficulty during my second play through to try and optimize my character and force myself to play more strategically. There are many mechanics which I simply don't use such as hacking. I just run around shooting dudes/tanking damage. Keep in mind that I am one to take time with crafting which buffs armor and weapons to allow you to take more damage/do more base damage. If you are only interested in the main quest then I would not recommend upping the difficulty.
7. The sheer amount of detail in this game is amazing. Just running around the city and the surrounding environments are enough for the price of admission. Whenever new GPUs are available and not stupidly overpriced I will be playing through this game again with ray tracing just to do it.

Anyways easy recommendation from me provided you can run it on higher settings, and you love games where you collect stuff/just run around in the game world.

Excellent game. Starts off pretty basic but ends up with really great levels and boss fights.

Easy to recommend for a full price buy imo.

Never ever EVER play this port. Get either prboom+ 2.5.1.5 or dsda-doom from doomworld. I would even stoop low enough to recommend gzdoom over this.

Just buy doom for the iwad files and be done with this version forever.

My time played in Doom is all through these other sourceports so my time on steam will not reflect how much time I have actually played the game.

Great game. No brainer.

Community can be hit or miss. Just play through it until you find some friends to play the game with.
