Not just the best in the franchise, Zombie Army 4 is the best game of its kind. I thought the first three ZA games were solid enough but clearly designed for co-op over solo play. ZA4, however, enables the player to level up, customise abilities, add perks, and easily customise a whole array of weapons (some standard, some more...esoteric. We're talking flamethrowers, shotgun mortars and crossbows that can fire electrified bolts here.). The net result of all these options is a game that's great to play on your own as well as with friends. Tip in the usual collectables, achievements, and Rebellion's slick attention to detail in the sound and graphics department and you have a truly awesome game.

Take no notice of the negativity surrounding the game's initial release on Epic (that's just Steam Fanboys being embarrassing) and don't let the plethora of DLC put you off. The base game and free DLC is more than enough to be getting on with. If, like me, you quite liked ZAT then I'm pretty sure you'll love this.

10/10

Altered doesn't appear to be on many wishlists so I thought I'd give peeps the heads up: it's a really good game! There. Now you know. Wishlist it and get it in the next sale.

At its core I suppose Altered is sokoban-ish, but that description is inadequate as the game features some clever and thoughtful mechanics that elevate it way above yer run-of-the-mill block pusher. It's genuinely hard to explain these mechanics but thankfully at the time of writing this review there's a demo. I urge you to give it a try (assuming you enjoy well-designed puzzle games).

Altered doesn't waste your time with fripperies like story and cutscenes but that's not to say it isn't nicely presented. It is. It's also very player-friendly with intuitive controls for keyboard and gamepad alike; it has unlimited 'undo last move's and level resets; if you get dead stuck on a puzzle you can try a different one as they're arranged in branches; and there are no timers involved. I also appreciated the fact that you'll finish the game with 100% achievements None of that artificial replay value masked as achievement hunting here, ta very much.

Altered epitomizes 'casual puzzler' without being lazy or dumb. It's actually very clever. Indeed, I felt pretty darned clever when I finished it, which is half the reason reason I'm writing this review. Final verdict: a smug 'buffing my nails on my lapels' 8/10.

Another year, another game in the MotoGP franchise. 2020 sees a marked step up in graphics over 2019's outing. There are new tracks and some of the old familiar tracks feel fresher, with more attention given to elevation changes than in previous years. I also enjoyed how practice for Qatar's night race took place in daylight, which added a little realism and variety to proceedings.

Another plus is that the historic challenges aren't so difficult as to require alien-like ability to 100% the game, though getting all the achievements still required some laborious grinding. I can't say I noticed a vast difference in sound but overall I got the feeling Milestone have finally got to grips with the capabilities of the Unreal Engine and moved away from the cartoony arcade style of, say, 2016's Valentino Rossi game. I'd give it a fairly solid 8/10.

First and foremost this is a first person puzzler, except the puzzles are hardly challenging and there is very little variety. You'll race through the first half of the game with barely a pause, mildly entertained but wondering when it'll pick up, and then before you know it you're at the final level more bemused than amused. By then you'll be tired of the bland aesthetics and eager to finish the game. And this is where Lightmatter really kicks you in the nuts. Because instead of taking a cerebral approach, the game pitches you into a punishing session of tedious platforming. You'll die (a lot) and grit your teeth and swear, all the while wondering why no one warned you that the game ended like this. I hated it.

And the game crashed to desktop with tiresome frequency. Thankfully it loads up fast.

Lightmatter is not entirely without its charms. The story and voice acting are decent enough, and hats off to the devs for all the Portal/Cave Johnson references. It's also an easy 100% achievements-wise so if that's important to you, and you like first person platforming, maybe you'll get more out of this than I did. Just wait for a sale.

Lightmatter... it started out 10/10, was still a respectable 6/10 by the halfway mark, but staggered across the finish line a lowly and unloved 4/10.

Trine 4 is everything you'd expect in terms of visuals and sound, charm and puzzling excellence. Unfortunately the combat has been very badly implemented. Shame, as it relegates a solid 9/10 game to 7.5/10.

Although Agent A's art style is radically different, the gameplay is similar to that of The Room games. The puzzles are smart and the execution of the humorous spy story is spot on. The music can wear thin after a while but that can be turned off so it's hardly a negative really. Achievement hunters in particular will appreciate that each chapter is accessible from the main menu, so should you miss anything, you don't have to trawl all the way through from the beginning. There's not much else to say: if you like puzzle games without the tiresome conversations of point 'n' clicks, this is one for you.

This is one of those games where you'll probably know whether you're gonna like it or not just by watching the trailer. Chances are you're only checking the reviews to see if people had any issues with bugs or dodgy controls, or how easy/difficult the puzzles are. Well, seeing as you're here, I'll assure you that it plays like a charm. A perfect marriage of slick platforming and clever puzzles. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the 15 or so hours it took me to achieve 100%.

I've played all the MotoGP games from MotoGP 13 onwards. I'm a big fan. When Milestone announced the shift to the Unreal Engine for MotoGP 18 I was worried there'd be loads of teething problems, but cheered by the fact that Milestone would release a few other titles first. Hopefully they'd iron out any wrinkles before working on the MotoGP franchise. By March 2018, the Milestone devs were blogging that the new engine was enabling them to make quantum leaps in terms of graphics, bike handling and crash damage/tyre wear. I became excited, and preordered.

I really should have known better.

Forget Milestone's claims about quantum leaps, this is a copy-and-paste job. It's MotoGP 17 with oversensitive controls and less content than any of the previous MotoGP games (not counting the stripped down 'Compact' versions, obviously). The damage system is simply scratches on the bodywork. And you get the same cosmetic damage regardless of whether you topple over at walking pace, bump a competitor, or cartwheel through a sandtrap at 200mph. So what's the point of that? And the Ai is inferior, riding around like they're on rails and taking slow turns way better than you can but going slower in medium to fast bends so you can still win even on harder settings. Seriously, what is the point?

It does have one pro to offset the cons - the tracks have apparently been laser-scanned and are more accurate now. Oh, and we have a new track in Thailand. But that's it. There's no historic challenges with all the extra tracks and bikes they brought with them, no splitscreen, and while there's still time trial it's made awful by a stupidly harsh system that invalidates your lap if you touch a kerb.

To summarise, I can't recommend MGP18 when the previous carnations are cheaper, give you more content (way more in the case of Valentino Rossi the Game, which is MotoGP 16 in all but name), and actually handle better. None of the MGP games are perfect, but this feels downright rushed.

The first Q.U.B.E. was an instant bestseller thanks to it being one of the first to follow in Portal's footsteps. Everyone rushed to get another fix of First-Person Puzzler happiness. The fact is though, Q.U.B.E. was merely okay. I'd go as far as call it bland. Since then, there's been plenty more FPPs, and Q.U.B.E. 2 needs to be considerably better than its predecessor to stand out from the crowd. And as you see from the trailer and screenshots, the devs have certainly worked hard on the graphics. Gone are the stark white tiles of the original to be replaced with multi-textured surfaces and atmospheric lighting. It really is beautiful to look at. The texture quality dips a little in some environments but overall, the visuals are very effective. The music is also straight out of the top drawer and isn't overdone, fading in and out as the occasion demands. The really important thing, of course, is the puzzle design. I found most of the puzzles fairly straightforward. That's not to say they're easy - some are real head scratchers - but few of them are as big or involving as, say, those in The Talos Principle. If anything, it's closer to Portal 2 in the sense that puzzles usually present you with limited interactive objects to use on limited surfaces, so you find yourself looking at the exit and reverse-engineering a solution. Length-wise, most players are gonna be done with this game in just 5-10 hours. But, and this is a big BUT, they''re very enjoyable hours. Q.U.B.E. 2 is easily one of the best first-person puzzlers on Steam.

Score: 8.75/10

You'd be forgiven for looking at this in the Steam Store and dismissing it as a cheap mobile port. Well, yes, it is both of those things, but it also happens to be excellent in every respect. The graphics are clear and atmospheric and, depending on your tastes, the music and fx are relaxing and unintrusive. The game's design is also very friendly. Checkpoints are frequent and you can restart a level easily. There's even a story if that's what floats your boat.

Where the game really shines though is in the puzzles. The mechanic of absorbing lights and transferring them to lamps and switches is simple but used to great effect. There's not one part of the game that feels lazy. Every puzzle on every level has clearly been tested and refined by hours of playtesting. The difficulty curve is perfect. This is not a platformer. There's no tricky timing stuff involved. It's all about finding elegant solutions, especially if you want to get 100% achievements.

It's a couple of quid for 25 - 30 hours of quality playtime. I loved it.
