First play-through took me about ten hours, maybe missed a bunch of content though. Being a Kingdom of Loathing veteran didn't hurt, but didn't exactly influence the gameplay either. Pretty good balance, quite doable for a rookie, I'd say, and a good balance of reading and fighting. Make sure you read what the NPCs say, it's often important and mostly funny.
