I have been a fan of Piranha Byte games since the first release of Gothic. I have played every game they made and knew fully well, what to expect. That's why I think ELEX is a great game, but has flaws.
The animations are clunky and sometimes weird, combat is a mess and the graphics cannot keep up with modern standards. The difficulty for first time players is frustratingly high as well, because you have to figure out the combat system and the way that enemies attack. As this stays true for a large portion of the game you will need a high pain tolerance for dying and loading that last save you did 20 minutes ago.
But the way they create their worlds is just amazing. There are so many details, so many little things to find and so much to explore out there. You can litterally run to the end of the world and find a hidden outpost, tower or just a skeleton watching the sunset with a last beer in his hand. If you take your time to explore you can learn a lot about the world and everything that happened. The story setting is well made and even though it may seems strange at first to have a mix of fantasy, mad max and sci-fi, it works. Each of the factions is well explained, has it's specific history and the way they see the world differs drastically.

Altogether ELEX is a good game and I'd defininately recommend it for people, that have played the Gothic series or like exploring a vast world. If this is you first time playing a Piranha Bytes game you might have a hard time because of the difficulty, but if you stick with it a wonderful game awaits you.
