I love Elite Dangerous, it has a steep learning curve, but it has a vibrant community that is eager to help new players. You can choose your path in the 1 to 1 scale procedurally generated milky way galaxy. As a commander of a sidewinder, you can set off to find your furtune. Space combat, ground combat, mining, exploration, archaeology, commodities trade, or pledging to one of galactic powers. There is always another mission to complete or a material to grind for to unlock another module or weapon to help you live a little longer. Stay safe and fly dangerously.
