Early Access Review
While scrolling through Steam's Featured Games list, my eyes beheld this gem. I decided to read through the game info and watch the trailer, after which I was more than intrigued. ARK: SURVIVAL EVOLVED is Minecraft meets Jurassic Park. Minecraft in a sense of the survival and crafting, then top it off with Dino’s of all kinds and other huge beasts. How could this be a bad thing?

As soon as I logged into one of the hundreds of servers that are running the game, I...was..hooked. I played nonstop for 5 hours. I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of graphic detail that has been put into this game even in its current Early Release state.

HOW IT STARTS: When your first login you awake to find yourself on the beach of some sort of tropical place. Your gaze moves to your left wrist where a diamond shaped device is embedded. Upon further discovery you find: You're naked. (But don’t worry, you still have your knickers.)

IN GAME: In this game you literally receive points for doing just about everything. You get points from attaining food or water, killing or taming animals, and making or repairing tools/weapons. (I suggest the spear...) You also get points for harvesting, gardening, mining, etc...the list is a long one. After performing enough of these tasks you gain a new level in which you can increase one of your abilities and further your knowledge in item creations.

In ARK even the Elements are against you. If the temperature gets too low or high you have to seek shade or warmth. You have to maintain your health by keeping hydrated and well fed. Even build a shelter or a pen for your tamed animals.

END GAME: Survive. Or don't. It's up to you, really.

GAME PLAY: ARK is standard gaming controls (WASD and mouse.) There is just one main actions bar where you can choose to quick select, which keeps the HUD nice and simplistic. You can also choose first or third person view, which adds different dimensions to the game. With the simplistic screen setup, ARK makes you feel like you are really there. Oh, and did I mention that this game is an MMO? So with that you can team up with, or prey on, hundreds of other players to survive, dominate...and escape!

ALL IN ALL: ARK SURVIVAL EVOLVED has happily become my current gaming time drain. I have barely scratched the surface of this sweet game and cannot get enough. I look forward to seeing you on the island!
