One of the best Shmup games ever made, up there with the likes of Ikaruga

This is definitely the best SoulCalibur game since 2, and it's great having it available on PC. It is highly recommended for fans of the series and fighting game players in general.

Doom is the most fun I've had in an fps in a long time. The new game harkens back to the classic gameplay of the 90's and updates it for the new generation. It polishes and perfects the gameplay formula so well, I'd say this game is the best example of it so far. Other games like Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior from Flying Wild Hog do this as well and they are incredible games on their own right, but the new Doom makes improvements even above the heights those games take it in terms of the quality of gameplay. There are types of enemy patterns and movements I've never seen in an FPS before and they require the kind of second-to-second planning and adaption I've never had to do before. It really makes the genre fresh and new again.

Even though I'm only a few hours into the game so far, I'd tentatively say this is the best FPS game I've ever played. I'll be updating my review once I beat the game to see if it stays that way. There still is the possibility of the formula getting repetitive and old by the end of the game, but it seems very unlikely based on my impression so far.

I'll split my review into two sections, the game itsself and the PC port.

Game:

For anyone who hasn't played DOA games before, this series and the Soul Calibur series are by far my favorite fighting games. However, the only problem I have with DOA is the excessive amount of fan service in the form of costumes. They can make the game look rather juvinile to onlookers at times, which is annoying. Ignoring those, DOA has a very deep, satisfying, and fun fighting system that strikes the best balance between being button mash friendly for new comers, but also accomodates a very high level of advanced play for those who put in the time. The moves and graphics are really flashy as well, makes you feel like you're part of a movie. As for DOA5 in particular, from my experience every entry in the series is clearly superior to all the entries before it, and DOA5 is no exception. Some fighting game series' aren't so fortunate, and their effort to appeal to a broader audience sacrifices the gameplay quality at the high level. DOA5 somehow dodged this pitfall, and remains a great game.

The PC port:

Contrary to what many reviews here have stated, from my experience the quality of the PC port is actually quite good. It runs very smooth and looks amazing, even on old/slow hardware. My midrange AMD laptop from 2011 plays the game perfectly at 60fps and that says something. I haven't noticed any bugs or crashes either, which often happens with poor port jobs. I know there are some features missing from this version, but all of them except for 1 really aren't a big deal at all. The game is still tons of fun and looks/plays great. The only glaring feature that I think may impact a purchase is the missing online multiplayer. However, this will be added within 3 months, and I'd rather play the game offline now and get multiplayer later, than for the entire game to be delayed 3 months. Thinking of this as a preview release of the game helps things in my mind.

I absolutely recommend this game to both newcomers and veterans of the series.

WOW, I had no idea pac-man could get this good! This is one of the best twitch skill games I've ever seen. It is very fast paced with dozens of ghosts on screen at once, then getting the big pellet and wiping them all out is so satisfying. I can't even put into words how great this game is! Just play it for a few minutes and you'll immediately see what I mean.

Shadow Warrior is awesome! Its made by the same devs who made Hard Reset, so they did a similar upgrade to the classic 90's formula for the modern generation. This game has the best melee combat I've seen in an FPS too. It has a genius control scheme that seamlessly combines Guns, Katana, and Ki power combat, using fighting game-style button combos to perform various Ki powered katana attacks and stand alone Ki attacks that can be used in parallel with the katana or guns. There is also a sophisticated, multifaceted upgrade system to really customize the way you want to play the game.

I can't recommend this game enough, buy it now, especially while its still on sale!

This game is awesome! It takes the classic 90's FPS formula and updates it for the modern generation. Kinda like what Serious Sam did, but takes it in a different direction. Its constant action, but to survive requires second-to-second strategy, recognizing enemy ai patterns and the perfect weapon to use for each element of an encounter. During a single battle, i'd switch between 3-4 weapons atleast, and sometimes more to perfect the strategy. I like how the ammo system works, so you can concentrate on which weapon is the best to do the job instead of constantly rationing the best weapons incase there is an extreme scenario down the line that needs it. Also, the checkpoint system was tweaked just right so I don't need to save/load spam to beat an area, and gives a good opportunity to think of a new strategy to enter a battle with each time I die, just like classic side scroller games did.
