It's Carrier Command as you always imagined it was back in the days of the 16bits. It's got a retro polygon style graphics engine that's just the same as the Amiga... only a lot more polys. And lighting. Instead of remote piloting your carrier, you're on deck (that's one thing I didn't like about this - getting from one station to the next can get really tiresome, especially when you have to hit ESC two or three times to get back on your feet).

Although I'm having a ton of fun with this - it really is superb - it doesn't feel as futuristic as the Amiga game did. No laser weapons (so far?) and all the vehicles feel plausible with today's tech - AI piloting aside. It's got some rough edges - a Seal got stuck in a building, and an Albatross steadfastly refused to accept waypoints - and the tutorial is worth skipping in favour of jumping into Youtube videos, but bear with it and it's very rewarding.

I've played several games now, restarting after capturing an island or two so I can practice various strategies and it's just heavenly. Feels about right and scratching the itch a huge fan of the original has.

I played this at the request of my son. I'm a (somewhat casual) fan of Earthbound, and this looked a nice comfortable game to play for a few hours.

I played through the first section, and it was only later when I realised with utter horror that I had done wrong. I didn't realise that I needed determination, and took a shortcut that rendered me less than I aspired to be. I ruined lives, though nobody really seemed to know what I had done. I was utterly, utterly despondent about this. To make things worse, the game knows you've re-loaded your save. It knows what you did last time around. And so do some of the characters.

I know one thing though - I will be doing the nasty, murderous run by proxy via Youtube. I can't bring myself to do it in person. And the game's characters know this, and will taunt me with my cowardice while I watch.

Play it.
