Underwhelming. Finished the two missions in less than 20 minutes. Plot is meh.

It's a good game to tide me over until the TF2 update drops. Which might mean I'll be playing this game for all eternity.

edit: Tf2 update dropped and I still like playing this game.

I am not one to play scary games, but Outlast and the DLC have both found a place on my favorite games list. Outlast is an extremely thrilling game set in Mount Massive Asylum, where the Murkoff corporation has been doing some not-so-moralistic experiments. You play as Miles Upshur, a cynical reporter who arrives at the site because of a tip-off by a whistleblower...

Pros:
-An interesting stealth system. There are several elements in your environment that you can utilize to hide from enemies. However, a more intelligent boss may see right through these tricks.

-It constantly keeps you on your toes. Often times, you will be left wondering if there will be a jump scare around the corner. Sometimes there is, sometimes there is not (which I believe adds to the surprise). There are many moments where you will feel trapped and confused.

-The game forces you to use the camera for its night-vision capabilities. Even then, you'll want to use the camera for other aspects like note-taking to better immerse yourself. Keeping track of batteries also adds to the desperation factor.

-The plot is intriguing to get into if you bother with it. Everyone in the asylum is human (apart from one character), which will make you question who the real monsters are. I found myself admiring the "big f***ing guy" as he is a dark hero. The more intelligent characters in the game have unique traits that prove they are still human. The story also gives believable "scientific" reasons for why some things happened.

-The graphics are nice even on low settings. However, you won't find yourself spending too much time admiring the details.

-The music itself is terrifyingly gorgeous.

-It is entertaining to mess around with the A.I. in the game.

Cons:
-EXTREMELY graphic scenes for the more faint of heart.

-The game is not very replayable apart from wanting to get achievements. The plot can be described as linear and you can only get scared stiff by the same jumpscares so many times, right?

-Stealth can be difficult at times due to not being able to accurately determine an enemy's position from the sounds they make.

-Hiding spots may discourage stealth as it might not be easy to see your surroundings from them.

-A.I. can seem silly at times. They stick to the same routes when first looking for you.

-Textures and areas can get repetitive. Most asylum patients look exactly like eachother.

Whistleblower, the DLC, has all the same gameplay elements. The story gives the prelude to the events that Miles explores. You play as Waylon Park, Murkoff's software engineer and the whistleblower, in the DLC. The plot can be a little more light-hearted when compared to Miles' story. If you decide to get it, I recommend playing the DLC first to get a feel for the gameplay elements. Overall, Outlast was an enjoyable, (very) memorable thriller and I look (nervously) forward to Outlast 2.
