If a game opens an external link without my consent it gets an automatic negative review.

My advice for TOS 2 would be to:
1. Make 14 friends
2. Gather those 14 friends
3. Play this game with them.
Not only will you avoid long lobby times, but you'll also (probably) avoid the ceaseless toxicity!

I picked up this game after having it recommended to me by a certain Irish reviewer. The game seemed intriguing, so I thought I'd give it a go.

For the first few hours, I enjoyed exploring the islands, learning the number system, and slowly increasing my understanding of some of the lore and culture of Riven. Around three or so hours in, I hit a brick wall, and couldn't find anything else to do. After another two hours of searching, I gave up and looked at a walk-through for this one step.

I was annoyed by how easy to miss the path forward was, and equally annoyed at myself for caving in. Perhaps this was the early warning sign that I should have dipped right there. But I kept playing, and kept hitting brick walls. I would search for an hour or so, then give up again. Towards the end, I just left the walk-through open so I could tab to it whenever I got stuck.

Admittedly, by using a walk-through I did ruin the game for myself. I reckon that I could have beaten the game without a walk-through - though I also think it would have taken me an age; each brick wall that I got stuck at had a solution that had me questioning if the developers were pulling some kind of practical joke.

I continued to slog through, still enjoying those occasional moments when the solutions were difficult (but not obtuse) to figure out. The death blow to my play-through came after the animal carving room, when I finally entered the correct password, and was given two books to read.

The first one took me 45 minutes to read thanks to the near illegible cursive writing and just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I read the second one. It put me into a cut-scene, then cut to the (unskippable) credits, and booted me back to the main menu, with not so much as an auto-save. I hadn't been saving often, as Riven didn't have any 'lose-able' situations (ie. combat) before this.

Though it probably would not have taken me too long to get back, this was the straw that broke the camels back. The highly interesting setting and the enjoyment derived from the furthering of my understanding of the Riven culture was not enough to offset the frustration induced by the often obtuse puzzle design and the specificity required for many of the clues. These two negative factors additionally resulted in my use of a walk-through, which severely reduced my enjoyment - after I broke that first barrier and cheated once, there was little moral incentive to stop me from doing it again.

Maybe at some point I'll come back to Riven again and my thoughts will change and mature, but I can promise that it's not going to he happening anytime soon.

To briefly surmise if you don't feel like reading my own Riven-length novella - I wanted to love the game, but was unable due to the frustrating puzzle design.

I'd say this is probably a must have for Victoria 2. Be aware, however, that you need A House Divided for this DLC to work. I'd also say it's only worth it during a sale. Victoria 2 is great, but 70+$ is probably too much.

Fun grand strategy game, though I'd absolutely recommend waiting for a sale to buy both a Heart of Darkness and a House Divided DLC. You can play the base game and it's still fun, but it is kinda cursed. With the DLC the game feels a lot more fleshed out and balanced. You'll probably need both those DLC for a lot of mods too, if you're looking to take that route.

I first played this game after having someone nag me about it for years. Eventually I played the game, and three days later I finished it. It took me 41 hours to beat.

There are 24 hours in a day, so 24*3=72, the number of hours in three days. This means I spent more than half my time EXISTING in those three days playing Deus Ex.

There's something special about this game. Obviously I highly recommend it, and have since been nagging others to play.
