This game has now enforced the use of a 3rd party account, months after launch and after many players are now unable to refund the game. This 3rd party account is of a service that is not available in many countries. On top of that it is now still a buggy mess with unintended game behaviour and frequent crashes while making the single player experience more difficult. Even with how good the moment to moment gameplay often is, I can not in good conscience recommend the game in its current state.

Early Access Review
Please keep in mind that this review is made about the gamestate it was at the time of writing the review.
This game at its current state is very much a raw diamond. But it is a diamond nonetheless. The games developers are open and eager in their communication with the community they built for example in their discord. That is the hallmark of a game that is cared for and has passion behind itself.
One could make the argument this game should have had more time in the oven but it is out now and not going back. The systems within the game are relatively simple with a lot of potential for expansion. You send out squads to scavenge ressources while you utilise buildings for shelter, storage and productions. Next to those you build defenses against the oncoming hordes. These systems are simple but do the job well enough for the genre.

The big selling point is definitely the map generation system. Being able to take any coordinates in the world and make a post apocalyptic map from that is very unique. Since the map generator uses google maps data, it means locations marked there as shops, schools, etc are also seen as such in the game itself. It is surprisingly fun to just play in the area around your home or a location you remember/find interesting and this game certainly emphasizes that.

All in all, if you do not think about buying the game right now, wait for a sale and put it on your wishlist. It is certainly worth it.

Early Access Review
In this review I purposefully ignore the gameplay balancing issues of this game as it is still in early access and unlike the stereotype, the developers have a clear vision of the future and are working consistently on the game with great improvements for every update.

So from the time I have played this game, the theme it goes for is a sci-fi saturday morning cartoon. The princess of a doomed peaceloving civilisation is guiding her ship and people through space and valiantly conquers all harship and challenges they encounter while they are chased to a mc-guffing starsystem by a genocidal alien race that uses black and red as their main colours. It's not the height of philosophical writing but it's not meant to be. You very much get what you are expecting and it is great.

In it's current state I can not with clear conscience recommend this product.

This game has a solid foundation. The gameplay itself is the typical fatshark experience that you got in the vermintide games but with some gimmick features and a lot more RNG. If you played any of those games, this game will certainly feel familiar in a good way. The missions in themselves are well structured, with each area they play in being visually and gameplay-wise distinct from each other as it should be. If you have not played the vermintide games before, I highly recommend them, especially vermintide 2. They have all of those benefits with a bigger focus on melee combat and nearly none of the drawbacks I am about to list.

However this is where the praise quickly dries up. This game very much is pained by the syndromes of the "games as a service" model that we have seen so many times before. The setup of shops and missions is not meant to entertain, but to artificially pan out the game time of the players.

You can not simply select the mission and difficulty you want to play. You have to stare at a screen that shows you about a dozen missions, of which 1 or 2 are rotated out every 5 minutes. The youtube content creator "Indypride" of the channel "milkandcookiesTW" has recently made a short video about just how much time you can stare at this screen if you want to do a particular mission at a particular difficulty.

The ingame shops are similarly plagued. There is a equipment shop with which you will have to regularely engage. This shop shows you around 12 to 15 different weapons and trinkets to equip your character with. Granted everything is very affordable and you will rarely have a problem buying what is there.
The real problem is, that this shop is bound to a realtime timer of 1 hour for when to switch the selection. The problem arises as most classes have over 12 weapons to choose from, each weapon can show up several times and each weapon has 5 veriable statistics that can vary wildly from weapon to weapon. This has caused problems for others and myself where a weapon you want with the statistics you want has a high chance to not show up for days on end.

The second equipment shop is based on a resource you get via weekly tasks like kill 500 guys in melee, or do 6 secondary missions in this mission. If you have any you do not like, you can use a small but increasing amount of ingame currency to change the mission to another random one. The shop that is tied to this currency is the only way to gain legendary items, of which you will only be able to buy 1 or very rarely 2 per week due to the limited amount of currency you get. This shop changes itself every 24 hours with only 4 items each time.

All of this together makes one part clear. This is not a game you are meant to enjoy. This is a game filled with FOMO traps and busywork to keep you in the game to keep you in the game no matter if you enjoy it or not. There has also been an announcement to bring a 24 hour rotation to the real money cosmetic shop.

This game clearly does not respect your time so you should not respect it either. If any of this changes I will update this review.

In general this game is what you can expect from it. the only difference is that you don't feel like a force of nature as you are more often than not dashing around to find more health. o played it on ultra violence and the game repeatedly kicks my ass. The main problem I have is something that feels a bit weird in terms of game design. This game is designed to make you want to get close to demons to deal the most damage and create opportunities for glory kills. However every demon has a melee attack that deals high damage and which they can do more than once per second. Even a low zombie does about 30 points of damage of your 100 health and higher demons deal way more. My only balancing change would be to reduce the melee damage of most demons that have ranged attacks or to make the blood punch stagger demons more, so you have more of an incentive to go into melee range.

It is a pretty well thought out roguelite space exploration/combat game. The ships are varied and themed for the different races and galaxies you go through. The Story is simple but that's not what the game focuses on. there are permanent upgrades that are expensive but usualy 1 can be obtained after a good run. Even revisiting earlier galaxies is worthwhile as with each visit you unlock one of about a hundret unlockable upgrades to choose from. The gameplay with the crew is very interesting aswell, as you have no artificial cap on how much crew you can aquire and there are different types of it, yet you have to manage the ressources with them. All in all a great management and space combat sim not unsimilar to FTL but with enough unique features to call itself a different game.

In all honesty I can give this game is great in concept. This review is written on 13th of febuary 2019, so ignore this review in later patches when they hopefully fixed the bugs. But in its current state in the game the progression has gamebreaking bugs which corrupt your campaign safefiles and for some people like me it is possible to have a bug that gives you negative faction xp for winning in multiplayer, which possibly locks upgrades again you previously unlocked. Understandably this turns me personaly away from playing the game.
