On December 8, 2023 , the online servers for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, along with several other EA games, were officially shut down. This marked the end of online multiplayer support for these titles, effectively retiring their online services.

After the official shutdown of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's online servers on December 8, 2023, the community stepped in to keep multiplayer functionality alive through Project Rome. This initiative, hosted by the Venice Unleashed community, provides an alternative master server to replace the EA ones that were decommissioned.
