Disclaimer: I usually do not play runners, because I easily get overwhelmed by the speed of such games. I received a review copy of this game through my Steam curator group.

Jack B. Nimble is an infinite runner with one-button control:
- the longer the button is held, the higher Jack jumps,
- if the button is pressed during a jump, Jack tries to whip the candles.
The score is the product of the distance travelled, the number of candles hit, and the percentage of successful hits.

The retro style is a success, with tones reminiscent of the Game Boy Colour era. Technically, the game runs great, supports a gamepad, and offers a setting to turn off the weather effects if you are sensitive to strobe effects. The game features leader-boards and Steam achievements.

Among the few things which slightly bothered me:
- the high speed reached by the protagonist after a short while is no joke, and it becomes extremely hard to jump successfully on tight platforms, even more if you try to whip the candles,
- the game is hard: there are 6 levels which you unlock by achieving high scores, and I don't believe I have the skill required to unlock level #4,
- the game gets repetitive, as is inherent to the infinite runner genre,
- despite ticking off the weather effects, there are trees which hinder the vision and lead to a kind of flashing effect when the protagonist runs very fast,
- there is a mouse cursor, which appears in the menus, and is controlled by the analogue stick of the gamepad. The sensitivity is quite high and it can be hard to select exactly what you want. This is confusing as one would expect that navigating through the menus could be achieved with a sticky cursor,
- there is an upcoming blockbuster in the same genre (Super Meat Boy Forever), which will necessarily block the light to other infinite runners.

If you are looking for a challenging runner, I believe this is a decent take at the genre.

There is very little text in between too many uninteresting fights. The French translation is rather poor. The gameplay during fights is driven by too much pointless randomness. The music is extremely repetitive. There are better gamebooks by Tin Man Games, e.g. « An Assassin in Orlandes ».

This is the ancestor of Hearthstone's free expansion, Kobolds and Catacombs, which was released on December 7-8, 2017. The developper of this game is Peter Whalen, a now senior game designer at Blizzard.

I love this game. I bought it expecting a platformer, metroidvania, or some of the other things it is known for, and instead I got Dark Souls and ended up enjoying it more than any other platformer I've played in a long time. I recommend this game to anyone looking for a challenge, a love letter to the metroidvania genre, and a bit of a journey into dark souls in this one of a kind game.
