When my playtime for a game eclipses my 500+ hours of Simcity 4 (although that doesn't count the non-Steam version) then its obvious I hold it in high regard.

I've been playing video games for almost 4 decades and Rimworld has become one of my top 5 games of all time. Just to clarify what are my favorite genres are...I have played plenty of RPGs/FPS over the years but I really enjoy games like Simcity, Civ, Xcom, FTL, and Tropico. Rimworld appeals to me because it has aspects of city builders, sim management, and 'god-games' with lots of quirky randomness, replayability, and modability. Every new colony can be a vastly different experience from the last even if I adopt a similar play style as the last one. In some ways for me personally it is the perfect game that after years I never seem to tire of.

I would say if you really enjoy Simcity, Tropico, FTL, and Civ then you will enjoy Rimworld.

(For clarity I own both DLCs for this game but I only have Royalty enabled. Ideology wasn't for me and made the game less fun for me)

Cities: Skylines is the true spiritual successor to the greatest city building game of all time, Simcity 4. It offers you a chance to build much more realistic cities than Simcity 2013 but admittedly doesn't have the polish that Maxis can deliver. However you also don't have the frustration that Simcity 2013's underlying systems offered.

I won't go into detail, it really is this simple....if you liked Simcity 4...you'll like Cities. If you liked being able to track your Sims actions in SC4 following them to work and home....yep, you'll like Cities. It will take some time to adjust to Cities' UI (Simcity 2013 UI is much better imho) but it is well worth the effort.

You can describe Planet Coaster as a modern day Roller Coaster Tycoon on Steroids. So many options, so many items in the workshop...soooo little direction and instructions from Frontier Games on how to play the game...lol. You will be overwhelmed when you first boot the game up. Remember how you felt when you first played Elite Dangerous? Yup, same exact feeling. Here are 4 youtube videos and um...you'll figure it out.

As you begin to 'figure it out', you'll find a really fun and sometimes frsutratingly complex modern day take on Roller Coaster Tycoon. I'm 8 hours in and starting to really enjoy it and I haven't even tried building my own coaster yet....just learning the basics of running a park.

It's hard to describe why I have played this game so much. There is just something about 'driving' a big rig around in virtual representations of states that I have yet to visit in real life which I find enjoyable. Just like in Euro Truck, I enjoy the building your trucking empire part of the game (hiring drivers, buying garages, etc). I really enjoy the game, however there were issues.

The scale was different from Euro truck and you could definitely tell. Some merge lanes and rest stops were definitely not typical for highways here in the US and were much too cramped. At times the game didn't properly protray the openess of the American West. The American Truck Sim rescale is now in open beta and I would highly reccomend it.

I'm excited to see what states the game will add next and as they do I will come back and play for hours. Some might find the game boring or mundane but I really like it.

UPDATE: Since my review in late 2016 the games scale has been changed to match Euro Truck 2's scale which is a huge improvement. In addition many of the Interstate/Highway interchanges have been reworked and they have a decidedly more 'American' feel to them.

In addition the New Mexico DLC continues in that same vein. The Interstate interchanges feel bigger and more like the real thing.

I'll explain it like this....It is like a 1980s Communist Bloc version of Cook, Serve, Delicious but instead frantically preparing hamburgers for customers you're examining immigrants' documents to see if they should be allowed to enter your country. Very addictive and fun.

Very addictive and fun game. I describe it as Spelunky, Castlevania, with a bit of Super Meat Boy thrown in for good measure. After your character dies....and YOU WILL DIE, you get to pick which of his/her children will carry on the family quest to conquer an ever changing castle. However each child might have some...um....interesting characteristics you have to deal with. If they have vertigo, you have to play with the screen inverted. If they are dyslexic then every word on the screen is mixed up and hard to read. It has a great charm to it as well.

It is like Robotron 2084 got the 'Pacman Championship Edition' treatment. I downloaded the demo from the developer (puppygames.com). In-game you can buy it for only $4.97! They then supply a Steam code to use. Well worth it. There have been an increasing number of indie games which have disappointed me but not this.

Cool little game that I think will appeal to Tropico and Civ fans. Tons of content for the price and lots of fun. You are in control of a spaceship and its crew as they flee across the galaxy. Great soundtrack as well.

With the addition of the Rush Hour Expansion, Simcity 4 became the greatest game in the series. It is shameless and inexcusable that EA continues to mock loyal Sim City fans by releasing games and expansion after expansion in 'The Sims' franchise while giving Simcity fans...NOTHING. Simcity Societies.....don't even go there with me. Give us a true sequel to Simcity 4!
The mods for this game are amazing! A necessary mod for Simcity 4 is the NAM (you can find it over at Simtropolis.com) which adds tons more transportation types and improves the games' pathfinding. Check out the BAT as well >> homes, skyscrapers, conds, landmarks, parks, etc that you can download and have appear when conditions are right.....or wrong ;-) in your city and region.

One of the greatest gaming franchises of all time. This version has been streamlined a bit to help newbies not be overwhelmed. I still like Civ 4 better in many aspects. If you could combine 4 and 5 you would have the PERFECT GAME....
