Review Showcase
To be completely honest, there are aspects of the complaints at this expansion that I can understand. Many reviews cite performance issues, which I experienced, and granted that's a completely valid reason for not recommending this version. I would contend that the game and by extension this expansion were made for Sony consoles, and with such a huge expansion it makes sense that they'd focus less on optimizing. Remember the performance issues with the base game at release on PC? It remains an issue, and I expect they are working on it right now.
Many cite the lackluster amount of content, and this may be the only argument I completely disagree with. The expansion is easily 2/3 the physical size of the base game, and though there are fewer small dungeons, would it really be better with more dungeons a la base game? Quality over quantity.
And, of course, many reviews say that the difficulty is too high - or, more accurately, they say it is "cheap" or "unfair." To be fair, a sense of difficulty is somewhat subjective, but a provable fact is that the perceived difficulty of a game will steadily decrease over the course of time due to the playerbase better understanding what the game does. I think the current mindset some people hold of "too difficult" is an unfortunately pessimistic viewpoint. Some people have already completed all of the content in the DLC, maybe on the latest NG cycles, and surely without using methods that trivialize difficult segments or bosses. Yes, these people are likely highly skilled, but is that not a motivating factor? If these people can do it at such insane levels of difficulty, then why can't you? Some might say that the difficulty is forcing them into gimmicky playstyles, so I'll end this review with this anecdote: I was able to complete the DLC and beat the final boss using the same weapon I had used throughout the rest of the game. Once I fought the boss enough and learned its moves, I was free to use the weapon I wanted through the use of strategy and perseverance. I consider myself a somewhat skillful player, but not nearly on the level of some people, and I was able to do it.
Hopefully this review is meaningful to somebody, and nobody notices my subtle bragging about completing the hard thing, no pause. I liked Elden Ring a lot before the DLC came out, and I like it about the same if not more with this DLC. Feel free to call me a moron fanboy sweatlord.
