Lichdom: Battlemage is a fast-paced, spell slinging action combat game. It's very visually appealing, and the story takes you through a decent variety of good-looking environments where you fight waves of enemies with a number of pretty fun spells. The difficulty of the game scales quite well and can be very challenging on the higher difficulties - though if you choose to put the difficulty up, you will want to take advantage of the rather versatile "custom inventory" instead of the more streamlined "smart inventory".

However, the game does have its flaws. It is very linear - while there are some interesting things tucked away in the corners of the map, there is only ever one path forward. The game sort of encourages you to pick one set of elements and stick with it - higher level elements do more damage, so if you switch around a lot you'll eventually find yourself underpowered.

It can also feel very repetitive; the format of every level is the same (fight through smaller enemies, fight a miniboss, repeat until boss fight). This is amplified with the optional 'loot machine' fights. They're generally worth it due to the sheer amount of sigils you can obtain, but they are tedious and repetitive. I also feel that they distract from the sense of urgency that the narrative tries to convey - if someone I care about is in mortal danger, I shouldn't be stopping to fight some optional skeletons.

There is some interesting worldbuilding and backstory, but you only catch glimpses of it in the game's narrative. Most of it is delivered via collectible - and optional - journal entries. Despite the tags, I do not consider this a role-playing game. There is only one narrative choice in the game, and that is whether you play as the male or female character.

I personally enjoyed the game, although I did take a fairly long break around the middle because of how repetitive it was. I had fun with the sigil crafting system and experimenting with different powers, and the higher difficulties provided a nice challenge one I'd gotten the hang of the combat system. It is not, however, something I can see myself playing again anytime soon.

TL;DR version -
Pros:
- Fast paced action
- Very pretty, varied environments
- Cool spell effects
- Difficulty scales well
- Decent crafting system

Cons:
- Very linear.
- Repetitive
- Game encourages you to stick to one set of elements
- Worldbuilding not really presented in the narrative
- No significant replay value

In conclusion, if you like fast-paced action games and a bit of a challenge, give Lichdom a shot. If you're looking for something more tactical or with more role-playing elements, you might want to look somewhere else.
