Early Access Review
They made poorly planned updates that nuked players' progress. After waiting long enough that they were no longer willing to restore previous players' data, after years they added a whole new set of achievements. Can't recommend.

Also, the server selection is hidden away and doesn't show which ones you've played until after you load them and click through the tutorial. PSA to anyone returning that at least a little bit of your data may remain, try Moonglen.

Not an idle game, more like a babysitting game, and one that horribly mismanages computer resources. Requires thousands and thousands of clicks for mining, so why not just build in an autoclicker upgrade? Very simplistic and the castle takes so long to upgrade it's not worth the hassle.

If you're interested in a unique, great-looking, fun, and well designed rhythm game, Overpass is a great match. Could be the most fun I've had while learning to actually play a game well. There are plenty of goals and extra ways to make it more challenging once you have things down, or you can turn on all the easy modes...if you're a wimp (or if you want to enjoy it as a more relaxing/accessible experience). Plus the level editor/workshop support means there's plenty more to do if the regular levels aren't enough. I'm surprised it isn't more popular.

If you pick up the crowbar at the very beginning of the game before trying to move past it, which it isn't immediately obvious you can do, you are locked out of 100%ing the game (getting the secret ending) without completely restarting. Absolutely unacceptable, not to mention the bugs. I've heard the developer has disappeared as well, but don't know for sure.

This game finds a very good balance where similar games have failed to keep my interest. It's definitely a bit confusing to figure out each system at first, but it's worth the effort. There's a clear progression through different areas, and whenever I've gotten stuck, it hasn't taken long to overcome. I like how the different systems tie into each other and how certain inventory items give passive stat boosts.

The story isn't full of jokes or references, and it gives you enough tidbits to keep it interesting, but it's usually a very slow process in between idling (or not-so-idling as the case may be - I've found it pretty addicting to keep checking back). Don't expect an epic novel or anything.

NB: I'm not very far in the game yet, but I've read that systems you unlock later make some things much faster. Even then, it seems like there's still plenty to do (e.g. story branches) so that it doesn't become a repetitive grind like in some games.

In Other Waters is a beautiful, wondrous, unique experience. The writing (which is copious) is extremely detailed and believable, which helps solidly build the world you're exploring even though you can't see it directly. The mystery plot on top of that creates an extra element of intrigue and suspense that adds to the existing atmosphere and kept me hooked.

The interface design and the soundscape do a fantastic job as a substitute for a direct graphical representation of your surroundings. Nothing is just a radar blip - each item of interest has its own characteristics, which I could associate with them when reading the taxonomy entries. I also like how the interface changes to show when you are in different areas. Combining that and the sounds with the terrain graphics, every region is distinguishable and interesting. Exploring is very rewarding, especially because it gives you more background on the environment.

Some reviews mention the power and air management as a negative. Maybe if you're expecting a purely casual experience, it can be a bit jarring. But I thought it was a great feature of the game that added a bit more "gameplay" and also added to the immersion. I never had major issues with the system, because you can almost always find enough samples to keep your levels up, even though I read every single flavor text as I went along. The interface does a good job of keeping you aware of the systems without being distracting. A couple times I turned back when my levels were low, but it turned out there was an exit just ahead anyway.

One thing I thought was a little underdeveloped is the depth system. You'll be at the same depth most of the time, and then towards the end you go to some more extreme depths, but there wasn't very much in between. Most of the depth changes are traversing caves and shafts. It seemed like there was a lot more opportunity there, but it's understandable that the game did need to be finished at some point. Another thing that some other reviews pointed out is it would be nice to be able to see your current position on the overall map, although I usually had a pretty good idea of my position and heading. Lastly, as a completionist, I was hoping to find out whether I found every map node, point of interest, etc (other than the solitary missable: at the ending, click the creature point first).

I think the length of the game is very good. It took me 10 hours to get 100% according to my save file. If you beeline the story and don't stop to smell the flowers, that could be a lot lower. I was always eager to dive back in and see what came next. Of course, there's still a lot more we could see on Gliese 667 Cc.

I've never seen or played a game quite like In Other Waters and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It does take some patience if you want to get the most out of it, but it's worth doing.

A really enjoyable mystery-solving game. I nearly completed it in one sitting because I was so engaged and interested in the story. The visuals and interaction have a pleasant flair to them, and although I'm not familiar with the setting, it felt very authentic. I might say it was a little too convenient how well some discussions related to the present day, but history does tend to repeat itself.

Although there technically aren't puzzles, it was still fun to gather the clues and make discoveries and guesses about how the pieces fit together. In the end it becomes unambiguous, which I prefer over games where you're never sure if you're making the right choice. That's not to say it was predictable.

The price I would say is a little high for a game that can be completed on your own in 3-4 hours. However, there is some replay value, because I'm sure I missed a good bit of optional dialogue (and cab discussions may be random). It might be a little tedious to see it all because of how the save works, but the game does allow you to skip some long sections. There is also an interesting potential sequel hook from an unresolved point which I would like to see, but the developers recently released a different genre of game as an Epic exclusive, so I don't know if that will happen.

Achievement hunters beware that some achievements are missable if you progress to the end. If you look at the image and maybe the title (more spoilery) of each one, they're easy enough to pick up along the way. The first two as well as Vision and Master Sleuth are not missable.

In summary, this is an engrossing story with a solid presentation that I'd definitely recommend getting if it's on sale.

Later levels are barely playable. Whatever service the game uses for login seems to be down (probably their website), which also means three achievements are broken: checking the rankings, sharing your score, and obtaining all achievements. As a rhythm game it's very barebones. There are some nice parts to it, and after beating the game I sort of got used to it, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

The calibration didn't help much and can't be adjusted manually. During play there is absolutely no indication of timing, so I don't know how to try to adjust the calibration, if that even is part of the problem. Hits just don't seem to register properly a lot of the time. Maybe because it's hard to follow what the notes are timed to. Maybe because of how the game prioritizes your input to targets that are closer to the middle (that's actually a good thing). Or maybe the timings are just weird and very strict.

Most of the later levels have fast hits which are very hard with the one button setup (second button only does anything for simultaneous notes in multiple circles). It's also very hard to count them, so you'll just spam and hope you don't hit one too many and break your streak. The concept sounds cool in theory, but in practice you just end up spamming keys (to little avail, since the timing is so weird) and you're hitting off-beat notes in the inner circles all the time. The reaction time is quite short, so you can't prepare for any complicated segments.

Pro tips: you can use keyboard and mouse controls at the same time. MAYBE if you're really good and can unhook the two sides of your brain, you could use that to hit fast notes while also doing double hits. More usefully, if you hold down the primary button, you can use the secondary button to hit notes (except pinks), and it won't break your combo if you miss (most of the time?). However, it does seem to stop increasing your combo after a hold. You might be able to rack up shields this way, but if you're in the middle of the level you'll have to make sure you're hitting a target when you start holding down. Also, I tried to release hold ends slightly earlier than I would hit a normal note, before the sweep reaches the circle, and that seemed to help.
