MW5 Clans is a huge leap in effort from developer PGI, and it largely delivers.

There are significant technical issues present, and players easily frustrated with nonsensical bugs like custom keybinds resetting to default on game launch or frequent large FPS drops (I have a 7950x3D + 3080, graphics on mixed med/low, maps run around 100 fps but drop to ~50 in firefights, even down to the 30s during enemy spawns) should wait for more patches.

The story is engaging, with lots to chew on for franchise fans, and more exploration of Clan society than we've seen in previous Mechwarriors. Voice acting is pretty good, with standouts like Galaxy Commander Perez, and while others have complained about character and face animations, I find them all good to great (keep in mind how low the bar has been set by games like ME Andromeda).

The game's interfaces are very clunky and unintuitive, and in this respect is probably even a step backwards from MW5 Mercenaries. It's easy to completely miss the fact that you can mix omnipods from different sets (option is in the component config, E hotkey, when modifying equipment, not on the omnipod unlock screen). There are profoundly stupid holdover issues from Mercs like needing to unbind melee attacks from your AI pilots' weapon groups to prevent your LRM boats from running in to punch the enemy Atlases. The optimal use of Requisition isn't necessarily obvious (max out your salvage capacity, then focus on scientists, to get your upgrade research going early). Issues like this abound.

All that said, the shooty mech action is immensely satisfying, building on the good parts of MW5 Mercs, and with the feeling that missions matter this time. It's a worthwhile installment for Mechwarrior fans.

edit 20241028 - patch 2 fixed the aforementioned kebyind resetting issue, but performance is still abysmal

Highly recommended for masochists. Enjoy this hyper realistic getting-shot-simulator. Looked around a corner? Get shot. Looked over a hedge? Get shot. Walked three feet behind cover? Get shot. Crawled 200 meters in deep grass without alerting the enemy? Explode from a random artillery shell, respawn, and immediately get shot. Playing on Carentan? Get shot at half your normal framerate.

It's short, but quite the narrative experience. Beware of dust or other eye-irritating particulates while playing.
