11.04.2022 : Janky, unoptimized mess (probably due to the entire "voxel generation" hype that Astroneer once went through) with a gameplay loop that is better serviced by games like Project Zomboid and/or Left 4 Dead and Rust, etc. End of entry.

I have been holding out on this for a while now, but here goes. I have completed 109% of this game. That's right - not 100%, not even 102%, but 109%. This should tell you that this review, that I am trying so hard to not make it read like a copypasta ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, is legitimate. Now that I have used up my gamer credibility for the opening of this review, it is time to ask - is Hollow Knight a good game?

Although I am a little bit fuzzy on the details of whether I actually completed the game look it is only the final boss I don't care I dONT CARE I HAVE 109% SHUT UP SHUT UP-

Hollow Knight is a beautiful musical masterpiece that has ruined any and all metroidvanias to come. It is a sound game, both mechanically and visually, and is possibly one of the very few games that I can call bug-free, confidently. Your sense of progression is diegetic, and baked into the game perfectly. And while the experience carries a brooding atmosphere, the combat is very lightweight (and the characters are often lighthearted, at least superficially). You will have to be very invested in the game to figure out the complete lore for yourself, but I suppose that is better than having to use a guide for the gameplay.

Like most other 2D metroidvania soulslikes, Hollow Knight is also mouse-and-keyboard friendly - something I did not expect from any soulslike game. The limitation to just a single plane makes all 2D games mouse-and-keyboard friendly, in fact - a little tidbit I have gained from some very questionable choices. Except Cuphead. Cuphead is just a little ♥♥♥♥♥ of a game, but more about that in another review.

Go in blind. Explore. Fight. Upgrade. It's Hollow Knight. It's the Dark Souls of soulslikes. How many times has that joke been made already? [\i] It is a fun game. It is a tough game. It is a fair game. But, is it a good game?

Never trust the reviews. Never.

The game gives me physical headaches. The pain is not worth the time I'd spend in pursuit of why, but it does. ?/10.

?/10. In my hour of playing through this game, I took away one key experience from this game - consistency.

Titan Souls puts you in the shoes of a two-bit do-gooder that resembles that one guy from Shadow of the Colossus. The art style and graphic direction meant that there could not be breathtaking, dramatic scenes where you get to conquer a "titan" before you put it out of its misery; this is balanced out by the game's controls often being out of the player's control.

The art style is unique, but the use of isometric frames (where, instead of pure 2D or 3D, you get a Fallout-esque diagonal projection to be able to visualise a 2D frame in 3D) - in a game where your main objectives are able to move in the third dimension freely - makes it a very questionable design choice.

You have no reticle or projectile arc to show you where your arrow goes, which means you cannot use in-game tools to determine whether the shot that you just missed on the first boss that waddles around like an idiot was the game's fault or yours.

When you first get into Titan Souls, it comes off as a game with freedom and choice, but no. The game is consistent - every tile has the same amount of detail and attention put into it, every boss (at least the first few I encountered) has been designed to make you feel like you are learning from every single death, and every checkpoint (one - yes, one checkpoint) has been designed to make the act of walking to the boss chamber frustrating. Everything within the game, including the sloppy input response, is consistent.

If you do not go "♥♥♥♥ this, I'm killing this baby dude and not walking to that room again!" every single time, you are playing Titan Souls wrong. Then again, maybe I should have finished the game without getting frustrated at the controls to write such a detailed review-
