If you're like me and could never quite get into the SMT/Persona games, this one isn't going to change your mind. There are some things that set it apart from them, but overall it has similar enough vibes that I can tell it's still not for me.

1000xRESIST is the most interesting piece of media from 2024 that I've experienced so far in any medium. I've already written an entire blog post about it and only barely scratched the surface of my thoughts on it, and I expect it's going to stick with me for a while.

If anything you've seen or heard about it sounds at all interesting or like it might be your kind of thing I can say it's extremely worth the price and dozen or so hours of your time.

The nicest thing I can say is that I'm not refunding it and I hope it gets better. In the trailers it looks like it'll be a lot better than playing it actually was.

The default move speed is painfully slow, and the weapon cooldowns are agonizingly long, and most stuff doesn't feel very impactful. Maybe those things eventually get better with enough upgrades, but there are so many games in this genre that if I'm not having fun immediately there's no point sticking around.

It also doesn't help that some stuff is poorly explained (if it is at all) or visually unclear.

On the plus side at least it was slightly more fun and less tedious than writing this review on the Steam Deck without a keyboard.

If you're not looking for anything revolutionary and just want a themed solitaire game where you know exactly what you're going to get, this or any of the other Jewel Match Solitaire games are always a safe bet. They've found their niche, and the games consistently deliver exactly what they say they will with no bugs or glitches or anything. Just pick your favorite aesthetic and away you go. They aren't my favorite thing ever, but they're kind of like comfort food I go back to every now and then when I'm in the right sort of mood, and they're very reliable.

Also somehow they found a way to make solitaire exclusively heterosexual? So that's a thing. At least it runs perfectly on Linux through Proton, just like all their other games.

Now that Boyfriend Dungeon came out unexpectedly this past week I finally got a chance to play it after backing it like three years ago. And it's good! On their own the dungeon crawler and VN/dating sim parts are both good but not super amazing, but the way they're combined just works and makes the whole thing better. The combat is on the simpler side, but there's enough to it and enough variety between weapons to keep it fun for the length of the game, and most of the characters are fun and grew on me over time. It definitely feels like it was released with some stuff missing, which I guess they're adding in an update later on, but what there is now is good already as it is. It's also really nice to play something like this and not feel like half the story is withheld if you decide to not be romantic/sexual with a character. They still have complete and developed stories where you're just best friends, and that's pretty neat. Also Sawyer is my beautiful disaster enby who I will protect as they grow into being a functional human being.

It follows the same exact formula as all the other similar games, except This Time There Are Bats. If you're into that sort of thing and just want a casual fun solitaire game this'll do. There's nothing amazing about it that makes it stand out, but also there are no significant issues with it. It just does what you expect. The extra bonus games in the original Jewel Match Solitaire were more fun, at least for me, but otherwise it's basically the same game. Also it runs perfectly on Linux with Proton.

Ok technically I played Firewatch before the previous two games/posts, but I was still thinking about it. Conclusion: I don't think I'm going to figure out what to say about it. It's very good though. I don't think I'd say it's the best game I've played so far this year, but that's because I played Mario Odyssey and Age of Calamity this year and thoroughly enjoyed both. Firewatch is probably the strongest narratively though with the most feelings involved.

I don't really want to say too much about it because it does feel like something that benefits from going in fresh without knowing too much about it. You're someone who's ended up as a fire lookout in the middle of nowhere in a national(?) park in Wyoming, and even just the introduction about how you ended up in that situation is pretty intense. Throughout the game it goes a lot of serious places talking about loss and isolation, but also connection, so if you're not in the right frame of mind for that maybe wait.

They managed to capture everything very well with the visuals and the music and the changing atmosphere, and the voice acting is excellent. They had some great actors working with some great material. I was surprised by the direction they went with the story, and for a while I was very curious how it was going to get resolved. By the time it finally was though I was actually considering that I'd be ok with it *not* being resolved and just being a character study that's about the journey, not the unknown destination (and thinking about that made me want to watch Lost in Translation, which I haven't seen in several years). I was slightly underwhelmed by a couple aspects of the ending, but overall it worked.

I dunno, go play it. It's good.

As a big fan of the original this was kinda disappointing. I was expecting it to be more like that, and while I appreciate them trying something different it just isn't that much fun for me. It's a weird mixture of a lack of mechanics (e.g. the locked or frozen cards or vines or whatever from the first game) making it get repetitive, at least for the first few hours, with too much complexity. The skill screen is a disaster, with no way to tell which ones you can currently afford, no useful information when you mouse over them, etc., and it just feels tedious grinding for resources to upgrade stuff compared to the other game. I hope Dire turns out better.

I had some issues with the native Linux version not responding after losing focus, but the Windows version runs fine through Proton.

Also the music is amazing and they need to sell the soundtrack so I can give them/the composer money for it (and so I can listen to it outside the game).

Good, but it falls a little short of great. The music is the thing that stands out the most, and *that* is great. The presentation is otherwise pretty good but occasionally missing things...there's a ton of room on the screen for a little more information, or just stick it in the tooltips. The story and humor are fine, but they didn't super do it for me. Enough to keep going and none of it bothered me, it just wasn't my thing. And the latter half of the game is mechanically fairly annoying at times, plus the scaling between tiers of things toward the end of the game is pretty frustrating because there are *orders of magnitude* between different items and upgrades. Instead of steady progression it just feels painfully tedious for a while before making gigantic leaps. I think they leaned too hard on trying to make manually clicking relevant later in the game and instead made it very punishing to *not* click, considering how long the periods of basically nothing are otherwise compared to the first half. The ending is neat though and probably the next best thing about it after the music. It's no Universal Paperclips (go play that if you haven't because it's excellent), but it's alright.

Overall pretty good. The pacing does get a little wonky the further in you get as you wait for the cards/events you need to come up, but I enjoyed the writing in general (even if the ending was a little weak), and it's impressive how much depth they managed to get out of such a minimalist system.
