As the commander of your own army, you get to pick a weapon, for which you can unlock active abilities. The same goes for the units you recruit, they unlock passive and active buffs and additional formations.

The combat can be a little clunky but once you get the hang of your attacks and skills, it's really rewarding to dunk on those archers as a dual wielding dagger demon, stunlocking an enemy commander to infinity and beyond or be a samurai and swing your katana amongst the enemy troops, spreading death like another grim reaper.

You can also pick a firing squad and gun down enemies like dogs.
