Every FF to come out after FFIX is inferior. PS1 era was something else.

A good recommendation for anyone who enjoyed Return of the Obra Dinn. Leverages some of the mechanisms that that game established.

over 2000 hours played. This is the best turn based strategy game ever made. Until they make Civ 7, maybe.

Early Access Review
24 hour peak is 4 players. This was a good game when it was still possible to play games. RIP.

This game is the perfect combination of the best RPG game elements out there:

The overworld map is hex-based (hexagon is the bestagon) which gives significant weight to how you decide to move your party around the map.

Battles are turn based and a "dice roll" type mechanic determines success, with stats, proper equipment, as well as on-the-fly tactical decision making also playing a role.

Each class has a specialization or particular stat advantages that come into play both on the world map during random environmental events and in combat.

Dungeons are a string of combat rooms, broken up by various events like traps, healing wells, and goblin merchants. Each battle won in one feels like a real step towards a goal.

Meta level play is also important. Certain characters and abilities can help improve your XP gain, your gold gain, your focus gain, or various other aspects that are not simply damage or healing. Do you make sure to end your turn as a Buskar always near a city or settlement to tap into the extra gold? Do you play your herbalist in such a way to maximize your herb gathering potential? If you really want to dig into it, there are so many tiny decisions that can be made in any given game that push you towards different paths to victory.

And the rogue-like element is also a massive plus. Many times I've played 20-40 hour long RPGs, only to wish 10 hours in that I could re-roll my characters to try a different build. That element is built right into this game, as you are not expected to survive the whole campaign the first time through. You play, you learn, you apply that knowledge to the next round and build upon those incremental improvements to chip away, towards victory.

This game is great. My only wish is that this model somehow gets turned into an MMORPG one day.

Negative reviews are all complaining about VR issues (I am playing without VR), controller issues (using a PS4 controller, took about 30 minutes to get used to it), or connectivity issues (didn't have any). The game itself is fun. Definite recommend.
