Better (and less silly) than Vampire Hunters. Plenty of achievements to work through. Plays on a potato and is just simple fun.

I bought this on a whim, having liked both the Left 4 Dead series and having played through all of the Sniper Elite games, previously. In essence, if the two games generated a offshoot between them - then Zombie Army 4 is a pretty close match to what would be produced. What I really appreciated was that the Season Pass 1 and several other DLCs were free within Steam - but a little more on those later.

It follows familiar fare. Evil Nazi occult meddling has created a seemingly endless wave of undead to try and take you out. Similar to the SE games, you have a sidearm, a secondary weapon such as a shotgun, SMG or assault rifle and of course, your main choice of primary rifle.

As you progress, you gain unlocks to all of the weapons. Some pretty realistic such as increased clip size, scopes and grips to increase recoil control. There are fantastical attachments such as electric damage, explosive damage and incendiary damage to your weapons on a limited basis, also.

Here is where I find ZA4 deviates quite significantly from the SE series. In those games, your focus is spent navigating around a mission map, selectively and stealthily taking out your objectives. In ZA4, rarely does any of that matter, perhaps with the sole exception of the fairly rare Screamer enemy type - where excessive noise or attacking it directly will make it charge towards you.

The missions whilst varied, tend to follow a similar path. Hold out against the horde here - initiate a blood fountain there. They could end up feeling quite repetitive, if it wasn't for the excellent level design - where the background scenery works very well and there are plenty of bottleneck locations that you can try to funnel the undead towards you with.

I would argue that the missions within the Season Pass 1 are better than those those of the core game. I had more fun playing those through than the little underwhelming feeling that I got by the end of the main campaign. Aside from a couple of new unit types, it expanded on the story and clearly left itself to link in with Season Pass 2. I think I would buy both the SP2 and SP3 in a sale, but perhaps not at full price.

Solo play is good fun, though occasionally the quantity of the enemies can be a bit excessive - more so when the painfully slow reload animations are being carried out, or when your weapons are in their basic and weakest specification. I played the vast majority of 22.5hrs at review time on my own, but as a sidestep, the co-op games that I have joined have been fun and the other players very helpful and never toxic.

A few strange design choices do litter the game however. Rebellion somehow thought it was 'normal' for the camera view to shift from left to right (or vice versa) should you tap the reload key whilst aiming. Why? I've absolutely no idea - but I had to Google that in order to fix it.

An aim toggle that is a favourable feature of most shooting games, isn't within the control inputs screen, but hidden away in a accessibility menu. Again, a bit strange. But the weirdest one I came across was using the Space key for aiming - it is fundamentally broke - and sees the player zoom in and zoom out at a very rapid, repeated rate. If you use any other key for aiming, this issue goes away - quite why that happens, again I'm not too sure.

Quickly getting around those issues at the start however, leaves you with a fun single player title, but a much better co-op game. I managed to pick this up from cdkeys for less than £4, which was still correct at the time of writing, compared to the £41.99 being asked by Steam.

On your own, I would give it 7/10. But with friends, I would increase that to 8.5/10. Taking on the waves of zombies via many different methods and means, is never boring when you have some help. Overall, this is much better than Rebellion's other offering of Strange Brigade but in my opinion, not as fulfilling or as enjoyable as the Sniper Elite series.

Another clicky cat game that's free and strangely enjoyable as a quick diversion into something different. Find and click away at 100 cats on a static background image. You'll find easily half in no time at all, but then you have to search and train your eyes a little harder.

By far the hardest to find is Leman who unfortunately is hidden by part of the UI. By zooming in a little he is revealed - but I'd consider that as a small bug as he cannot be clicked without doing so.

The music is a tad repetitive as well, but nothing that cannot by muted anyway.

I never thought I'd see the day when a game out-Jeff Minter'd, a Jeff Minter game.

Play this game on drugs, alcohol or both. On your head and via a mirror. It 'might' just make more sense by then.

The main issue for PGA 2K23 is that 2K21 exists. The newer game struggles to be clearly superior to its older sibling. The differences (although many) between the two games are superficial at best.

THE GOOD

  • The three button control method has been added - I could be wrong, but I do not recall this being a feature within 2K21? This is akin to the golf games of old - the likes of Links 386 Pro and PGA Tour 486, making the game controls more accessible and usable to novice gamers and newcomers to the genre.

  • Way more customisation of both your player and kit, should that be your thing. Sponsorship's and kit options are aplenty, with the series now including female players, this time around.

  • Multiplayer access pretty much fell off a cliff with 2K21 - making it virtually impossible to partake in a MP game without joining some form of chat group beforehand. Not so much with 2K23 - there still appears to be an active MP community.

  • The music. Just wow - I thought they had set the bar high with some of the orchestrations within 2K21 - but this is another level up. Often I slide the music volume down a fair bit on most games, but with 2K23 I'm spending longer in the menus and customising my gear, simply to listen to it in the background.

THE NOT SO GOOD

  • As has been said by many other reviewers - the number of adverts and store offerings is oppressive to say the least. You cannot even start the game without closing down at least one window of microstransactions. Some in-game tokens are valid as far into the future as the 31st December 2027 - which I interpret as either being generous to the player - or wishful thinking on behalf of HB Studios.

  • The whole skills and upgrade paths are not that clear in terms of UI as to what you should do. Those could be simplified a lot more.

  • Often - the crowd at the edges of your screen are not even looking anywhere near your swing or ball travel. Like a bunch of semi-autonomous mannequins out on day release.

  • The excellent commentary can sometimes get a bit disconnected from what is happening. Having a rivalry with a selected player is all well and good. But entering the 17th hole with a 12 shot lead realistically puts them nowhere near catching you. Yet still they mention them as being a 'threat' or potentially being in contention.

  • Class this game more as 2K21 v1.5 rather than a standout, standalone game in its own right.

  • weird G-sync issue for those running at 144hz. It's very jerky - especially when following the ball in flight. If you drop your refresh rate to half on the main screen @72hz - it plays very smoothly indeed.

In summary - if you liked 2K21 and see this in the sale, I would recommend it without question. It fills that nice gaming void at the end of the day when something like an FPS or strategy game is just too much to be dealing with and having a quick round on here is rather relaxing. It does not revolutionise the golf game genre, but merely adds to what already is available and is probably all the better for it.

Just if 2K25 comes around - hows about easing off on the ads, eh?

7.5/10

Reviewing something over a decade old maybe be a little odd, but this entry is by far, the weakest of the four titles in the Batman series. The single biggest issue? The patience required for learning the boss fight sequences.

Imagine if you will, Batman Arkham Origins was a racing game. In this racing game, you manually change gears - but you can only do this when the engine revs are between 8,210 and 8,258rpms. Too early, your lap time is invalidated. Too late, your lap time is invalidated. Do this a few times and the race is lost. Similarly, think of that rhythm genre of games where beat matching is EVERYTHING to your progress. Now overlay that into a Batman fighting scenario and you're pretty much on the money.

Rarely, have I felt a gamepad feel so sluggish and disconnected as to what is happening on screen. It's genuinely awful to experience and the frustration just builds and builds. I actually switched from wireless on my XBox controller to wired as I initially thought something was wrong with the hardware - the sense of disconnect was that bad.

Do yourself a favour, skip this and go straight to Arkham Knight - assuming you have played the previous two titles also? The relief was actually tangible when I uninstalled this.
