"She talked to Janet, took her coat, and left"
Translates into either:
Hun snakkede med Janet, tog sin jakke, og gik (took her (own) coat)
or
Hun snakkede med Janet, tog hendes jakke, og gik (took Janets coat)
I'm guessing Swedish, Norwegian, and German has the same differentiation.
It's
"sin" singular his/hers where the object is masculine
"sit" singular his/hers where the object is feminine
"sine" plural his/hers no matter what gender the object is.
The really funny thing is that it doesn't work in OP's text.
"Lindsay told Jessica that she had cancer" contains no direct ownership
"Lindsay told Jessica about her cancer", though - that would work. "Her", in this case, would be replaced with "sin" if it was Lindsay, or "hendes" if it was Jessica.
