.so the gameplay is fantastic. but the game suffers from SEVERE performance issues, and numerous gameplay bugs.
if you have a powerful enough pc, it'll probably run fine. maybe.
my cpu+gpu (core i5-6600k, 1060-3gb) should? be above the minimum (although cpu threads and vram are a weakpoint of my system), yet even on the lowest settings i get awful performance ~20fps. it's playable but not very nice. nothing i can do about it 'til i get a better pc (since this one's approaching 10 years). but ontop of that, there's numerous crashes i get during matches and MANY, many gameplay bugs. not to mention the >140gb game size. it's not just me either. whether you're on a pc, xbox, ps5, countless others have these issues. you'd think they'd fix these issues before they released to xbox, to give them the new wave of players a better experience, as y'see, they haven't. but why? because of the outdated and discontinued engine the game uses. and arrowhead has acknowledged this! they released a "state of the game" post where they say that a "60 day patch fix would only be duct tape where they need to solder", and that they can only do minor performance fixes. they say they're working on a development plan to address the issues, but what can they really do? i know myself as an indie game developer that an engine change would be INSANELY difficult considering how large helldivers 2 is, that their devs are trained in autodesk stingray and they'd have to either learn a new engine or hire new devs, but that just seems like the only way to fix these issues.
but thinking about it more, i believe i've figured what they may be doing
so they've been looking for engine developers recently, my guess is that for the larger fixes they have an "engine team" that will work on soldering the ancient engine together, to modernize it, like rewriting the renderer or overhauling the job system

whilst the overhaul is happening, the main team will continue to find and fix performance hotspots in the game code, that's the duct tape.
atleast, i'm just hoping this is the case, since most players i see on forums can't piece together how hard it really is to change engines, or thinking arrowhead is prioritizing profit instead of fixing the game. although not sure why arrowhead wouldn't just outright say what they plan to do either.

i'll switch this review to a positive one, as it's maybe clear the devs are trying their best to get the situation back together, but we just have to wait. so uhhh don't buy just yet if your pc sucks like mine.
