It's 2025 and you are looking at a review of Skyrim. You are either bored or have been in a coma since 2011.

That said, I've heard that the GOG version of some of the Bethesda games are a bit more stable but I don't have issues with this version. Also, make sure to look up how to keep the game from hogging your controls so that you can still use media controls on your keyboard.

TL;DR: the game had crashes in the late game, relies far too much on collect-a-thon style tasks to pad play time, and the red bricks are free. I cannot recommend it, especially for that final point.

I will start off by saying that I grew up on the LEGO Star Wars franchise and the first LEGO Batman game (the old style of LEGO game) so I have some biases there right away. I have also beaten both LEGO The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (which I would call new style). Before writing this review, I completed the game. Light spoilers will be included, but nothing directly story related.

Due to numerous issues I had while playing, I cannot recommend this game. The story is cute and the characters are generally likable, but there were a bunch of minor and major things that took away from my enjoyment. The 2 major things are that I had several crashes that came out of nowhere and that the Red Bricks, arguably the main thing you want to spend your studs on, are unlocked automatically. I didn't have to spend a single stud on the Red Bricks. This makes studs worthless almost immediately, because the game practically gave me the 2x multiplier without needing to try in one of the first few levels.

There also ends up being just so many collect-a-thon style items to complete in this game. Super builds, sure. Criminal arrests, makes sense. Returning pigs to a farmer? Coffee Breaks as a tradesman? Rescuing cats? Were these really all needed?

Some minor items included:
  1. When you destroy something made of LEGO Bricks, the blocks stick around for a while and are objects, which mean that you get stuck on them and it delays progress.
  2. Lack of a compass on the minimap bothered me more than it should have.
  3. When you end up completing all of a special type of task, such as vehicle burglaries, you do not get a specialized message. Some of them you do, such as being congratulated on arresting all gang members, but when you return all of the pigs, the farmer doesn't call to say thanks; when you steal all the cars, the crime boss doesn't call to say thanks.

This isn't a major or a minor thing but it's worth mentioning: this game has a severe tone problem. It can't decide who the target audience is. For example, none of the characters have real guns; the closest thing is a laser gun but this only stuns enemies. There are no guns, but then half of the characters available are direct references to mafia movies, old TV shows, or they rapid fire 9 different references at you at once (this happened twice, with both a Morgan Freeman type character and an Arnold Schwarzenegger character). I get the idea is that it's probably for a parent to play with their kid, but nowadays, I think some of the references might even go over the parents' heads.

Overall, I definitely had fun with it, especially after maybe 10 levels where I could actual explore and do things, but even so, the game is clearly trying to shuffle you through the story super quick (sometimes not even letting you stop the story without having to restart it) and it's just not as fun. It's a big hub world and it feels empty pretty quick. Without a real challenge of even getting enough studs to buy everything, the gameplay is the only thing that will keep you invested and it gets boring and repetitive super quick.

Loved the demo so I bought the main game. It's a lot of fun.

My only complaint is that the suggested community levels are part of the total Crown Count for the level, which feels...bad? Like, if I don't like a community level, I can always stop. If I don't like the suggested community level, I have incentive to keep playing it over and over again until I get Gold (which I don't want to do because I don't like it). If they had their own counter, I wouldn't have a problem with it and I would ignore them until later.

TL;DR: It's a 3.7/5. Play it if you like the LEGO Games and the LOTR franchise, but be aware of noticeable bugs and quirks of the game. It also isn't the extended edition of the movies so several scenes are missing.
If you are coming from older LEGO games, like the original LEGO Star Wars games, you'll notice new features, such as:
  • Voice Acting
  • Larger open world
  • Quests in the overworld
  • Power Bricks requiring quests and not found in levels
  • A large expanse of items and weapons you can use in Free Play.
  • Late Game Custom Character Creation
If coming from its sequel game, LEGO The Hobbit, you'll notice things too:
  • NO MATERIALS TO COLLECT
  • All three movies are present
  • Limited Super Strength and Explosives characters
  • Split parties (like in the movies, which can limit which characters can go where at first)
  • No horse customization or selection
The following are just other complaints and comments I have:
  • Funky Physics in parts, like complicated platforming or any plank balancing.
  • Character switching glitches. For example, if you want to switch from Gimli to Legolas in the open world, occasionally you will switch to the player 2 character and THEN switch to Legolas. Additionally, when trying to press and hold the character switch button, you might end up switching to the player 2 character instead of having the selection show up.
  • My playable character just flying up in the air when walking around.
  • Death even when having invincibility (such as during auto-run segments)
  • The open world can often feel empty and the directions to your destination is often ineffective. Since it's the full Middle Earth Map, traveling can take a long time without horses, which aren't always available.
  • You get Gollum really late in the game and the plans for the Mithril Climbing Shoes are also SUPER late.
  • No treasure finding or blacksmith plans power brick, which can be frustrating when they are hidden behind a rock that you can NOT see behind ever.
At the end of the day, I'm still going to 100% complete the game but I don't think I will play this one again. There are just some noticeable quality of life items that aren't present and while Middle Earth is fun to run around in and the levels are pretty close to the movies, it's just a slog at times.

short, sweet, and tons of satisfying sorting. The achievements are clear and attainable as well, if you are into that kind of thing.

Every hole is listed as a Par 0, making it impossible to get even close to par. The strength of the hits is too low, meaning a "hole-in-one" (which is technically still a bogey) is impossible on 70% of holes.

Look, I like Monkey Ball games. I suck at them, but I like them. The fact that this game has a jump button should have been my first clue that this game is bad. It physically hurts my eyes to play this game.

Seriously, how do you screw up Monkey Target?!? HOW?!?
