An incredible, bite sized experience. Be sure to keep a pen and paper handy. I'd love an anthology with a bunch of research style games like this!

Perfect little bite-sized game. Beat this in two sittings and had a great time throughout.

The challenge of Dark Souls with the freedom of Breath of the Wild. One of my biggest gripes with Dark Souls was always hitting a progression wall, but the freedom of Elden Ring fixes that. If you are having trouble with an area, just go poke around somewhere off the critical path, level up a bit, maybe find some new weapons, then come back in a few hours.

At this point I really feel like I've seen everything, but it was a solid four hours/two sittings. The game has some rough edges, and certainly feels like it is still in development. However the fast pace and straightforward mechanics make for a very good "snack sized" tycoon game, which you don't see a lot of. If improvements and updates continue to be made, I would 100% revisit!

I snagged this from humble, and wasn't sure about it when I saw it in the bundle. While a "coding adventure game" seems intimidating, the short run time and gradual incline of difficulty makes this a perfect puzzle game for me. Combine that with subtle environmental story telling, solid art direction and clever verbs, and I was hooked from the first time I played.

The Good
  • Presents a beautiful, bright, well rendered world with robust variety of landscapes to explore.
  • A well thought out game with a point.
  • Brief enough that it hardly overstays it's welcome.
  • The last several minutes of the game are masterful.
  • The Music. All of it.
The Bad
  • Tries, very hard, to be meaningful and thought provoking and frequently falls flat.
  • While the narrative portions are written well enough, the dialogue is in a similar written voice and comes off as stilted and expository. This is the most egregious when the voices break out the quotes by notable individuals. While they are technically relevant, they caused the scene to loose momentum and took me out of the moment.
  • Many Exploratory dead ends down long pathways to no avail. Invisible walls stopped me from seeing things I wanted to explore.

I would have a hard time recommending this game to most people, but for fans of walking sims who may enjoy a clearly personal work from a small team you'll probably enjoy your time visiting The First Tree.
