The story begins in 2010 when I was serving with the Polish military contingent in Afghanistan as a pilot of the Mi-24 attack helicopter. I was stationed at a base in Ghazni Province, operating in one of the most challenging terrains. The Mi-24 is a powerful and reliable machine, but it demands precision and cold-blooded composure, especially in the difficult conditions of the Afghan mountains. One of the most intense moments of my mission happened when we received intel about a Polish patrol that had fallen into an ambush in the Wardak Valley. Our orders were clear: immediate support. Along with my crew an onboard mechanic and a gunner we scrambled to the helicopter. Adrenaline was pumping, but each of us knew our roles. There was no room for doubt. We flew low over the terrain, trying to avoid enemy RPG and machine-gun fire. The desert landscape quickly gave way to difficult mountainous regions, where every bend in the valley could conceal insurgents. As we arrived on-site, we saw the Polish convoy surrounded on several sides. The patrol was holding their ground, but they desperately needed our cover to retreat from the ambush. We engaged immediately, flying low to provide close air support. The gunner opened fire with the side-mounted machine gun while I maneuvered the helicopter precisely, targeting enemy positions. Every second counted. Despite its heavy weight, the Mi-24 was surprisingly agile, allowing us to react swiftly to the shifting battlefield. Our rockets launched, neutralizing key enemy threats.
