Such a good crypto mining software, so bad you can't actually hold your coins :(

Probably one of the best role playing game I ever played: even though the graphics are terrible, the gameplay is slow and the 2d art is outdated, I still have to give it a recom.

The story is very good but slow, it has a lot of setup and nice, cozy feeling that it's hard to explain. The characters are all nice and distinct, each having some background and an importance both in the story and in the gameplay.

Gameplay wise this game both shines and lacks at the same time: battles are based around the concept of playing with your (and with special skills, your opponent's) turns, for example by starting to cast magic (you need 2 turns to do so) and unleashing it on a critical turn, as certain turns have bonus. The power system is roughly based around FFVII materia system and I think they made a good work there, but it's better in Sky SC and Sky the 3rd.
What I really didn't like was that, even though NPCs are fun to talk to, you'd have to talk to everyone and backtrack a lot to get all the side quests and all the bonuses. Fortunately, the subsequent games streamlined the process a bit.

Overall a very nice game, but I'd say that it's definitely the weakest in the series.

Ok so, this review is kind of biased because this was my introduction to the series, but...
The story was consistently good even though it had a slow set up (about 10 hours in it starts to get better and I got sucked into the whole 10 games long series), especially toward the ending it scales up into a bigger plot that continues in the 2nd Cold Steel game.

The characters are great, probably the strongest point of the game: starting from a nice and interesting change into the "edgy teenager with a sword" trope of jrpgs, passing for the loli-looking Student Council President that actually is a very mature and comforting person and even a lot of the side characters that don't even appear in the main story but are just there into the school campus or the city, Trails of Cold Steel gives them a depth that most jrpgs don't reach even after hours of dialogues.

The batlte system is modern even though the game came out on PS3: it allows the user to customize which "magics" (here known as arts) can a character use from their equivalent to a cellphone of sort by changing the component of it. In battle, you'll mainly try to min-max each character to specify them into a niche, with no character being useless. Some fights are hard but it's mostly just up to a good strategy.

Another of Nihon Falcom's flagship is music, and in this game we see some of the greatest tracks I ever heard in a videogame. The basic battle theme goes extremely hard and a lot of songs are memorable.
Graphics are outdated and sometime the voices don't match how the lips move in the scene, but overall they didn't hinder my experience too much.

I think this game is worth the nearly 100 hours I spent to complete it, but if you like it... Grab it together the 2nd one, trust me
