Oxytone is a relaxing puzzle game, but it comes with a twist. You try to build long trails with the placement of tiles, it'll make your head spin and the trails will create sort of a labyrinth, where you have to keep up with all these twists and and possibilities! It mixes RNG and interacting with other tiles in the environment. There is also the possibility to rotate the tiles in 360 degrees or discarding a tile, if you are not satisfied with the offered choice.

It is easy to learn, but hard to master! The gameplay loop is also really addicting in the best sense, like encouraging you to beat different challenges in the game, unlocking one more level or just to improve your high score.

So far i played nearly 3 hours, but I'm sure i will try to beat many more levels and challenges in the game.

The visuals and sound effects + music (ambient-like) of the game are very appealing. I would describe it as eye candy and not too flashy for me. Though someone complained about some flash effects in the demo and the developer reacted promptly: now there is an option to reduce these flashing effects. Accessibility is also very good, the game offers contrast mode. It works very well with keyboard and also with a XBOX / x-input controller.

There are also modifiers like changing your trail color or the background color, which you can purchase with a currency you unlock with beating the challenges / getting medals. Or randomizing them on every game start. This keeps the visual aspect of the game fresh.

If you want to relax more, there is also a free-build mode, where you have unlimited tiles and discards. (this very easy to buy/unlock)
And you can also make the game/placement of tiles faster with the last unlock. This unlock will take a while, but that is fine.

I like bullet points to summarize my review, so here we we go:

Positive:
-Easy to get into, hard to master.
-Relaxing, yet still challenging.
-Eye Candy visuals. The twists and curves with the trails just look very nice and mind-bending!
-Nice ambient soundtrack/music. Very striking sound effects while building.
-Many challenges/medals to beat.
-Accessibility options like reducing flash effects and color contrast mode.
-Nice unlock modifiers like more background/trails colors, creative/free mode, speed-up mode
-No high system requirements, the graphic settings offers also different detail levels like potato or high quality.

Neutral
-A tutorial/manual isn't really needed, because the game is self-explanatory. But i think it would still be nice to add this in a later update!
-I would love Steam Trading cards for this game! :)

Negative:
-I noticed one small bug. With a XBOX controller the button placement in the pause menu is wrong:
X & Y / the buttons for restarting and quitting are reversed. I will inform the developer about this small bug and update my review, when it's fixed! But it's no big deal, if you know about that and I'm sure the developer will fix this very fast.

All in all i can wholeheartedly recommend this charming game. I suggest trying the demo and if it clicks for you, you can buy more of the same! :)

I don't know what to write. What a great experience and a truly wild ride.
Maybe i'll start with the "cons":
-text heavy / visual novel style
-game is mostly easy and hasn't that great puzzles/riddles
^- so in this regard it's different to other adventures/point n' click adventures.

But i didn't mind, i like visual novels and also this game will twist your head with the plot / atmosphere / surrealism and weirdness :-), so there is enough to take in and i think this combination was just fine.

Like others said in their reviews: go in blind. It's a dystopian piece of art. Really surreal and not easy to grasp at times. But really worth it!

As far as i know this just started as some student / documentary multimedia project but was expanded and published as a full game. It came out fantastic in my opinion. Doesn't have to hide beneath full time paid video game projects..

If you fear about some totally cryptic visual novel or walking simulator project too far away as some art project: that is not the case.

@Devs / creators: If you read here: Kudos to you! I rarely write real reviews, but i had too.

I think i just read, that you won't produce another game in this sense, that makes me a bit sad. Really hope some of head-writers / people responsible have a great career ahead. I didn't play Disco Elysium yet (but friend hold this in high regards) and i also think that it means a lot that your game is compared to Disco Elysium! :-)

it's alright.

The gameplay, graphics and the overall game aren't that bad. I forced myself to play it to the end.

But i think it isn't just a story about religion, but plays more like bible / jesus / christianity / religion propaganda game, which sucks. No critism on religion in games with this topic sucks. Or at least some kind of abstraction from the story / game and the content of the game.

I backed this on Kickstarter a long time ago, because it looked cool. Disappointing that it turned out as some cringe religious game. I also never got the poster i backed for, though i wrote several e-mails to the devs. Gave up then.
