This is a hot and cold one for me. On one hand, I love the combat system and the spells and runes are very fun and have lots of interesting synergies. Most of the fun in the game is going to come out of you finding new and fun ways to combine your spells and runes. If you are an outside-the-box type thinker who's always a few steps ahead, you're going to like the gameplay loop of this one.

However, the pay-off for the game is non-existent. There is no end, no final boss, no real scaling to the enemies after a certain point. The enemies health does go up each stage it seems, but not enough to outscale how powerful your character will be. Every run is going to end up as you just one shotting the entire screen every turn eventually. That is extremely unsatisfying for me and makes it feel like there's really no point in playing more runs now that I've seen every spell, rune and enemy at least once. Like, sure, I can go find more broken combos and such but to what end? Without a final boss to test my character on, or some elite gauntlet or something, it just feels pointless. Especially given the difficulty of the game. I've only tested hard mode so far, but even then the game feels overly easy. Unless the game gets like literally twice as difficult on impossible I don't think I'm gonna be satisfied. And this is only after my 10 hours. Imo a roguelike should easily be enjoyable up to and past 100 hours. And this game could easily achieve that with some way to consider a run "won" and maybe a few more runes/spells. But as of now, I dont plan on playing this game for even another 10 hours, let alone 90.

This is all coming from a 2-player multiplayer perspective. I found the game by looking for multiplayer, turn-based roguelikes to play with a buddy and so far its been quite fun to work off each other and together, combining our spells and talking through our strategy. And it does feel quite rewarding when your tandem plan goes off without a hitch. However, I have really no interest to play this game solo, there are just much better roguelikes to play by yourself. I would only consider this game if you've got people that will play with you or you plan on making some new friends or if you are used to playing games solo and this looks fun to you.

I dont have much to say about the art or music in the game. It's good. The animations are quite smooth so I enjoyed that.

The balance is quite abysmal so far, theres tons of combos and cool stuff to do in the game, but there is just some stuff in the game thats much too powerful to pass up and makes the game's choices much less interesting. Mana on kill rune, for example, is stupidly overpowered. Why on earth are you allowed to buy it so many times? This rune can easily generate 100s of mana in a few turns and once you are powerful and rich enough, it just straight up gives you infinite mana. The sell spell and interest rune are also obscenely powerful. And not to mention the most broken of them all, precision. Not having targeting spells seems tough at first, but with how much you can cast dash, pull, push, etc. and spam your damage spells (burst is best for it), you can just glide around the map one-shotting everything. It's disgusting. The clone spell, while hilarious, is also very broken since you can use targeting spells to clone your clones and exponentially grow your army, with any enchantments the original had. Combine it with the golemmancer rune and you are literally unkillable unless you died irl and fell on the end turn button by mistake. And on the other hand there's tons of spell that feel weak in comparison or just straight-up uncastable garbage.

Overall I think this game deserves a 3/5, you will almost certainly enjoy this game for a least a few hours if it sounds appealing to you, but I doubt you will get much more mileage out of it than that. I would recommend picking it up on sale like I did since I'm not sure I would've been happy paying $20 for this when brotato exists, is a quarter of the price, is more fun, is more replayable, has more content, and is much better balanced than this game.

Early Access Review
I can't recommend this game enough. Super fun combat that reminds me of action MMOs. The enemies are well designed and fun to learn their patterns and how to dodge them. If you love cunningly slipping your way through a horde of enemies while decimating their ranks, this game is for you. Not only is the mobbing fun, but the boss fight is a blast as well. The Master Nightmare is a masterclass in how to design a boss fight imo. I have more fun with that boss fight every time I get to play it.
Combat 9/10

Every character (apart from maybe snow queen) feels super smooth and is very unique. Their kits meld together well and the upgrades alter the characters enough for you to have many different play styles for each character. The progression system is okay too. Nothing too special, play the character, level them up, get more stuff: simple.
Character design/progression 8/10

The amount of content in the game is completely acceptable for an early access game. I'm 25hrs in and I still dont have everything unlocked for all the characters (im pretty close tho). Even once you have everything unlocked, every run is different enough that you could surely get a few hundred hours without getting bored out of this game, as it is now. And the next step on the roadmap is seemingly going to double the amount of content we have, so safe to say that I dont think you'll be running out of things to do in this game for a long while. And the content thats already in the game is of such high quality that it doesnt feel bad to run again and again.
Content 6/10

Game balance is something a lot of folks seem to want to chime in on, but with my small amount of time with the game I don't think I can really make any sweeping conclusions. A few characters feel super strong like Piper and Gepetto and Snow Queen can feel a bit lackluster if you arent offered a lot of damage upgrades, but everyone is viable and overall the balance feels fine. My only worry is that the game might be too easy. I'm less than fifty hours in and most runs I play I dont use any feathers and win most of the time. Every enemy is extremely telegraphed in their attacks and once you learn their patterns, it's almost impossible to get hit by them unless you make a big mistake. Over time I will be even better at dodging and filling ability rotations and choosing upgrades that the game might get a little trivial. Really hoping we see higher nightmare levels of difficulty for sure. Solo and multiplayer feel balanced, I've only played with 1-3 people, so I cant comment on how well 4 player feels, but I'm sure its fine.
Balance ?/10

Tl:dr This game is great if you love action mmo combat, interesting characters, meaningful decisions, awesome boss fights, and great flavor. This game has just an incredible amount of promise and I haven't been this excited for an early access title probably ever in my life. I do recommend that you give it a try.
Overall 8/10
