This is not the game that it looked like it was, so my initial reaction was mixed, but it’s growing on me. I was expecting something that played more like league of legends or something in that genre and it is not that. The amount of effort you spend using your character unique skills and abilities is actually pretty low. Most of the actual combat gameplay is just twin stick shooter style. Where the game shines is in the strategic gameplay.

It’s a tower defense game at heart, but the path to your defense point is constantly changing. Sometimes you even have to move it around to new rooms, which makes half your defenses suddenly useless if you weren’t thinking ahead.

It looks like the multiplayer is less emphasized than I had hoped, which is unfortunate. Currently a lot of meta progression is only gained by the host, but apparently they’re actually working on fixing that so I’m not holding that against them too hard

It’s a good game, I think, but maybe wait for some patches to come out and grab it on a steam sale.

I got this game 4 days ago and I've already played it for 14 hours. The strategy is infuriatingly complex and it makes my brain hurt in all the best ways. That said it sometimes gets frustrating when the randomized positioning of planets leaves you just stuck at a dead end that you could NOT have seen coming. It's not enogh to stop me from coming back though.

A simplistic RTS who's lack of frills make every tactical decision an agonizing one. I keep coming back to it.

There is nothing I can say about The Beginner's Guide that would not tarnish the experience of playing it yourself. You're going to have to just trust me on this one.
