Borderlands is past its heyday

For reference I have a group of 3 friends and myself that play video games together, we all enjoy DnD and have played through Borderlands 2 and 3 together and enjoyed both plenty. So this isn't going to be a super in depth review.

This was not fun, even with friends, weapons felt lacklustre, the humour never hit and the game is riddled with stupid changes like the UI being a mess. Absolutely meaningless changes like not being able to see when your fellow players are in a menu? They now just stand there with no animation or graphical indicator, I know this is a petty example but it made the game so much harder to keep playing when all your friends are frustrated at missing features or convoluted changes.

Gearbox and 2K have just slowly fallen off, I'm not very excited for Borderlands 4 after the movie and how they ♥♥♥♥ they bed with RoR2.

New Nostalgia

This game honestly brings me back to playing Dark Souls for the first time, I'll keep the Dark Souls comparison to that as this game is not a souls-like. However, this is a single player game with some visual story telling, convoluted NPC quest lines, challenging bosses and of course a dodge roll with i-frames. So I can see the comparisons but I wouldn't recommend this as a souls-like due to it's linearity, lack of build diversity and more hack and slash combat influence.

Getting side tracked from my own point this game pulls back to just here is a single-player game with well thought out mechanics, great inspiration and honestly no bullsh*t. I had such a fun time with this game, especially as someone with a fair interest in Journey to the West (mainly from reading it after watching the original Dragon Ball series, rest in peace Toriyama).

A lot of thought has been put into this game, one of the areas where this shines is the completely free re-spec system, was such a blast to get a new weapon/armour set with a specific enchantment and being about to completely cater to that without grinding for hours. The music video cut-scenes between chapters and are something I haven't seen before personally, they weren't all necessarily related to the current plot event (granted the plot of the game is rather loose/simple and it is just to progress retrieving the six artefacts and an excuse to fight cool bosses) either being flash backs or some slightly related story; regardless they were a blast and I never wish to skip them, they're gorgeous hand animated and one was even stop-motion.

It's very refreshing to see levels of care like this in a modern game that isn't shoving the "live service" cr*p down your throat with micro-transactions and now I'm more willing to give them more of my money for DLC or another game rather. I cannot recommend this game enough.

Bug Fixes Aren't Enough

Bug fixes are great, awesome, the game is playable (mostly) again. Which it should of been in the first place.

I think the big issue is the lack of content compared to the previous DLC. Lacklustre items, uninspiring survivors with unclear ability descriptions (I'm looking at you Seeker), no new enemies, etc.

Chef has been bastardised, the new movement skill was a cool progression of the character; but having your oil as a special sucks and really slows down his gameplay loop. Don't even get me started on his primary... it feels awful to click every single time to bring back the knives (granted I get is for burst but it just is so unresponsive) and having it be a 3 charged primary, it feels like you just blow your load on when an enemy gets in your face. The flames are so short range and you rarely get the extra damage from oil unlike ROR1.

I think the DLC needs a significant hit to content and some character tweaking. Sorry for being mad about Chef, they butchered my boy.

More Elden Ring with more heavy Berserk references.

There are still some performance issues with Elden Ring but nothing game breaking.

The difficulty is welcome not being able to steam roll the DLC after main game, great unique progression not seen in previous DLCs.

Amazing set pieces with unique bosses and extended lore connecting dots from the base game and an amazing ending and final boss leaving you questioning a lot.

Decent fun with a couple of friends, braindead horde shooting with some decent elite enemies and repetitive but rewarding objectives.

The birth of shadow style gameplay being optional and having interesting combat and not a one hit death system when failing stealth. Good break of the mould and unique for it's time.
