Let me weave you a story that occurred in my fortress.

It is the third year of my fort, spring has made itself known in my tundra, the ice will soon give way to flowing water. My industrious Dwarves have built a magnificent fort styled in a giant underground spiral tower. The above ground section was two stories tall with a retractable roof and a giant moat that would soon be filled with magma. Everything was going well...then the dead walked.

Marching across the snow was a small army of Undead, coming to tear down what my Dwarves have made. It was lead by someone I now fear now greatly for what he specializes in. The name of this foul foul necromancer was Yane Twistclenches. He was a Polar Bear Necromancer who learned the secrets of life and death and had a penchant for castration. I knew in my heart I could not let this foul beast near my poor Dwarves. My military stood ready, the crossbowmen took aim and shot the Necromancer. A vital success! They had pierced both his lungs and his guts, leading to the Necromancer to struggle to breathe while puking profusely. This incapacitation would help turn the tides of battle.

Though, there was his minions to still deal with and worse yet...A baby had been frolicking out in the meadows when I had pulled up my bridge. I have a no Dwarf left behind policy. I knew what must be done. I sent a kill order on the Undead Goblins, Humans, and Elves who meant to take away a life that had barely just begun. Much to my surprise, two Dwarfs answered the call with such zeal and heroism I had not encountered before.

The moat surrounding the fortress was 4 tiles wide, too large to jump across for any normal creature...or so I thought. The Mayor of this fort with his battleaxe got to the top of the ramparts and with re-election in mind JUMPED the entire 4 tiles, falling into the moat but catching himself on the ledge. Another Dwarf followed him, a woman specializing in hammers. How they both achieved this and circumvented the defenses I do not know. I prefer not to think too hard on it.

Pulling themselves up, they went to work. The Mayor rushed down the four crossbow men trying to shoot the baby. They turned and fired on him. He did not care, he was not shaken by their attacks. He deflected a grand total of 17 crossbow bolts one after another with his battleaxe as he charged them. He swiftly cut them down. On the other side of the battlefield the Hammersdwarf was struggling. The Undead Spearmen and Macemen had destroyed her legs utterly. The sensory and motor nerves severed in both. She could no longer stand and was bleeding heavily. Though, she refused to waver. Refused to give up in the face of imminent death. While on her back, she entered a martial trance. As they stabbed and swung down at her, she would roll around on her back to dodge each swing. Between each swing, she would swing her warhammer, destroying the Undead's bones until they too, could not stand. With each one she crippled, she would crawl over to crush their skulls in. She managed to achieve victory in a battle I thought she had lost.

The Mayor seeing the Necromancer still standing began to rush him down, but, it was too late. The castrating necromancer Yane Twistclenches fled, managing to live another day as he ripped out crossbow bolts as he left the map. The siege was over. I lowered the drawbridge and had my people retrieve the valiant woman who was kissing death's door. She made a full recovery, though, had no use of her legs anymore. Her sacrifice was not forgotten, a statue of her sits in the main hall of the tavern, depicting her and the Mayor's heroism in defense of the defenseless.

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress.
