Fun game overall as Sonic tends to be. Definitely screamed first mainline entry louder at some points than others (hub worlds, trivial boss design), but on the whole it was a good time
Probably worth noting I played with a plethora of mods as recommended by Pariah695, too.

This game is just oozing with charm- perhaps one of the most stunning art directions I've seen, certainly among the best of titles released in 2024.
It's a shame, then, that that's about all it has going for it...
It becomes apparent from very early on that the game is very, VERY, handholdy. This goes beyond the general lower difficulty of children's games- EVERY moment, EVERY turn, Plucky Squire can't help but yell out the solution. On top of that, there's hardly any sense of direction at all- the gimmicks are just about all over the place and as a result the game becomes a jack of all trades, master of none. It never really manages to perfect any of its various mechanics, leaving players with something of a jumbled, confused mess. As of writing, they just released a streamlined mode, which for some reason could not be enabled mid playthrough; while I'm sure it addressed some of my concerns, I think there's some fundamental flaws that came about through time constraints or poor planning that can't simply be patched away. Disappointed by what I had once proudly considered my most anticipated indie title, and would struggle to recommend it to those in a similar position.

Visuals are spectacular from start to finish, it's probably one of the most gorgeous games I've ever personally witnessed and feels like a playable Pixar production in ways I didn't think were possible from this medium
As for the gameplay itself, the first few hours drag on a little but overall the core gameplay cycle of shooting, fighting enemies/bosses, and exploring the world is very fun. There's some duller moments like with puzzles that try to break up the gameplay, but if you're willing to push past those the package as a whole is very solid. Some corny dialogue as well but I enjoyed the story for the most part.
Easy recommend on a sale- I got it for $32

Amazing game with beautiful animation and hilarious moments and references to various games. This game is great, both for players who played the original or are experiencing this for the first time!
