I still haven't managed to beat it even on the easiest difficulty and there are a lot of deaths leading to a disappointed ALT-F4.

But I keep coming back anyways. It's full of charm, there's so much room for you to approach the game in whatever way you want to play it, and the music slaps unbelievably hard. It's a must-have on sale but it's still definitely worth full price.

It's the kind of game that will stick in your head for weeks, months and years after you've experienced it.

This game looks like the sort of thing I'd really enjoy but I haven't figured out how to get past the login screen yet

This game is not worth more than 10$ and even then it's a tough sell. It's Fallout 4 but buggier and with server-side lag. You will often find your movement undone or weapon reloads ignored. The servers will struggle when a lot of combat is happening. It runs terribly and crashes often which is sad considering it often looks pretty ugly.

It is much worse for players who do not pay for an expensive subscription. For example, 'junk' items are needed for crafting resources, but your stash storage has limited weight capacity, except subscribers get an infinite capacity storage for these resources. People online refer to non-subscribers as "free to play" and it's not because of joking but because the frogs have been sitting in the boiling water too long.

As someone that likes building bases with the workshop mechanic, I was also really disappointed by how lacking the options are without paying real money in the microtransaction shop. You already have to fight with the clunky workshop building mechanics, I don't need any more limits on my ability to create stuff.

This game is far better when you go into it blind. You might end up finding the game boring, but that's a fair risk given the low price of this game. If this game ends up being for you it will bring an experience that no other game, book or movie can provide.

Stop reading reviews. Buy this game, and start playing it when the sun outside begins to set.

Pros:
- it's Skyrim. The game is an attention-sucking time sink, but I'll spare you more detail as everything good about this game has already been said.
- All DLC included and built-in.
- New graphical changes are minor, but altogether they vastly improve the visuals of the game. Respectful of original art style but looks very nice - light shafts through trees, superior tree graphics (very appreciated in a game absolutely filled with trees), beautiful water which fits the environment a lot better, smoother anti aliasing, and weather effects like snow and rain no longer go through walls. I know these changes are the butt of many jokes online but I sincerely believe they were a perfect addition to the game.
- Per-character save folders. Underrated feature which makes playing many characters much simpler. Also good if you want to have a 'vanilla' save but wish to play on a modded character for a while.
- Vastly improved stability of engine, which is now 64-bit. The game can handle more things happening at once.
- Far better performance, especially on modern machines. It's easy to hit 1080p60fps
- Modding allows for sloppier setup on user end, and the engine generally is more stable with a higher quantity of mods.
- Built-in, official mod manager. This mod manager isn't really any better than community-created ones, but it is very hard to mess up your game using it, and there is a great selection of user-made mods. It's a fantastic feature for those less familiar or less confident with modding.
- Dualshock 4 support.

Cons:
- The game still has an unacceptable level of crashing (I play with no mods whatsoever..) To a certain extent this is acceptable, but some random crash-to-desktops occur in the same places they did in the original release, which is embarrassing for a company as large as Bethesda Softworks.
- The UI is very poorly designed for mouse and keyboard. Using a combination of the mouse and keyboard to move around in the menus will have it 'stick' to one of the two inputs in a weird way. It is very unintuitive especially considering this game is from the same series as Morrowind. This persists from the original release but it really, really should have been updated by now.
- Although superior to the 2012 release, this game has a concerning lack of save 'security'; saves can corrupt, bizarre glitches after having played a character too long (permanently overencumbered, weird stuff like that) and still has odd effects from world changes (items lying around your house not in containers will fall, rotate, clip through the floor..) Generally a game that expects you to sink as much time in it as this one should take better regards to protect your save.
- Many errors and bugs from the original game have not been fixed, even when the community has been able to fix them through modding. This isn't something subjective like gameplay changes, this is issues like wrong dialogue playing in quests. Again, the studio should have been able to fix this.
- Although not a fault of the game as it is a result of engine improvements, this is a negative that should be known for anyone considering a purchase: MODS FROM THE ORIGINAL SKYRIM WILL NOT WORK HERE. Most of the good ones have been ported to SE but some still remain stuck in the 2012 release

**TL;DR**
This is a fantastic game and the Special Edition is the best way to experience it, but it still feels like so much more could have been put into fixes and user experience. 6.5/10

This game could have been a masterpiece but some parts seriously missed the mark. The Windows edition of this game feels the same from a technical perspective - it could have been an amazing point of reference for a PC's power, but ultimately doesn't cut it. I had several hundred hours on the console version of this game and I think this review will give you a good sense of whether or not you should buy this game.

I wish I could recommend this to everyone but I cannot. Let's start with the PC issues - this game crashes more than it should. I wouldn't call it common but it's more often than I would expect from a modern AAA title. I am way above recommended specs so I should not have crashes to desktop, yet here we are. The game can softlock a lot -- this did not happen to me when I played console at launch, and I think it occurs now because of sloppy changes which were made as the campaign was updated through the years.

I've heard some players get an unbearable stutter to the point of having to revert to older drivers. That's unacceptable and to my knowledge it still has not been fixed. However, I did not have this happening on my machine.

Additionally, the multiplayer DLC Comrades is basically dead - you can group up with some players on LFG services maybe, but you will almost never find anyone in the matchmaking. Luckily, it's actually a pretty solid solo experience for a multiplayer DLC. The 'avatara' function that was a main selling point of the PC edition, the ability to use your own custom avatar in the main campaign while also seeing 'ghosts' of other players like Dark Souls, is being removed this June (2020), which is exceedingly disappointing.

The mouse and keyboard controls are bad. They're not intuitive and even though you can rebind them, the game doesn't feel like it was designed to be enjoyed with that input method. Definitely get a controller for this title, especially a Dualshock 4 as that always felt the best input method to me (the game does natively support DS4, Xbox and generic xinput controllers as soon as they're plugged in which is a big plus).

Okay, so putting aside the issues of this version, the game is pretty good. It's a fun experience, the characters are some of the most lovable and realistic you will see in a game, and although the story starts out pretty weak, it gets really memorable by the end. The combat is stellar. It is by far the best part. The warp system, the fluidity of combat, parrying combos and party tech just make this game stand out from any other. The combat has an insane amount of depth to it if you try and explore the system, but the game doesn't tell you a lot of elements of deeper combat (which it did in the pre-release demos?) and, worst of all, the main campaign does not even remotely require the player to understand it. That's nice, but there's no hard mode for experienced players, so challenging yourself in this game has to be done entirely with your own restrictions. It's one of the most disheartening things about this game to me, that a player could play the entire game start to finish, even doing some endgame content, and not have the slightest clue about how deep and creative the combat can actually be.

I love this game, but I wouldn't recommend this game to most players. However, if you love worlds that you can get sucked into for countless hours, and you love experimenting with complex game systems that aren't really explained at all, this game will scratch an itch that no other can. You will hate this game and love it, in a whole new way.
