This game is fast paced.

This game has beautiful visuals.

This game has wide customisation.

This game has well fleshed out mechs and interesting abilities.

This game has a range of fun and varied game modes.

This game has...

Nothing. Not anymore.

Hawken was a great game with a small but dedicated fan base. Player counts were starting to pick up, youtubers were starting to review the game, and a strong community loyalty bonded players both to the game and to fellow gamers. Unfortunately while this was happening the publishers of the original devs squandered what money was raised on unnecessary, unasked for merchandise. The devs ran out of money, and Hawken development was discontinued.

The game was still fun, but with a floundering playerbase it was difficult to keep it alive. Regardless, with an injection of new players the game could be great once again.

Then Hawken was bought. Our beautiful game, purchased by a dev team renowned for grinding up and milking games for money. This is where I hung up my coat, and called quits. Since then, I've been monitoring Hawken in the hope it will once again ascend to it's former glory.

And what a naieve hope that was. The game was ported to console edition, but it flopped. The steam community was abandoned, and players have lost money and time they invested to errors- errors ignored and unanswered by the devs. Our game has been abandoned by people who cannot even muster the pretense to care.

Hawken, I miss you.

Hawken, I love you.

This game is decent, with a high skill curve and varied mercs, but the matchmaking ruins it. In the last twenty games I have enjoyed one. The other nineteen? Either players with hundreds more hours of playtime than any sane person carry whatever team they're on, with aimbot like accuracy, or teams are ridiculously skewed (to the point that my team had lower levels and two less people). Shuffles don't work because the ROFLStomping team vote no, or even when shuffles do succeed the pathetic game algorithm fails to do anything. The Devs attempted to implement a balanced and more rigorous matchmaking system, but it flopped completely when queue times reached 30+ minutes.

Simply put, the game's worth an enjoyable 30 hours or so before you get chucked in the deepend with no chance of swimming.

I've changed my review after coming back to Dirty Bomb a year later.
The game still has some matchmaking issues, but they are greatly improved and joining a match is much faster and easier than it used to be (no more scrolling through the server browser in hopes of finding a populated server), thanks to a complete overhaul of the system. Without ridiculously unbalanced teams being a common occurrence the game finally gets a chance to show it's charm, with (relatively) balanced mercs, well constructed and enjoyable maps, and fast paced skill-heavy gameplay. I'd definitely recommend having a go at this game, and all the more because it's free.

I sang to a snail for 23 minutes today. Strangely I don't regret it.

A relatively simple idea to grasp, EPOCH works on the system of a one sided combat arena with three different areas and two different 'positions'. You are either standin' and shootin' or crouching to reload. With a small selection of robots types used in many different lethal ways you will not fall prey to forgetting what the robot does as its weapon- rather to the selection of covering fire and synergy of the different weapons.

While the game is not based around 'strategy' as such is certainly rewards you for use of stun grenades to remove covering fire, or decoys to provide a moment to reload and focus on the main threat.

While the content is not exactly 100 hours worth, considering it was originally a phone game it is quite a lot. A bonus is the fact that when the difficulty increases the robots stats dont go up- they come in more numbers, and more combinations.

Overall EPOCH is a fun, simplistic, family friendly 3rd person shooter which will keep you entertained (and frustrated) for hours.
