I am actually having the time of my life playing a Paradox game on release. Will wonders ever cease?

I've been playing Pdox games since EUII, so I've seen a lot of changes over the years that have led to a love-hate relationship with Pdox. Throughout the devcycles of EUIV and Vic3 and CK2/3, I had a general feeling of displeasure with a lot of design decisions that I felt streamlined and simplified the games. While I get some may like that, I personally don't play grand strategy games for them to be anything but arcane wads of data and mechanics that I can lose myself in.

So... EUV. I feel like I picked it up pretty quick, though I'm still learning bits as I go. And I gotta say, it feels right. It's deep, complex, the mechanics mostly make intuitive sense once you figure out what's going on. I kind of miss national missions. The time dilation is amazing, everything takes more effort, more time, and time passes slower, which is what I have always wanted from these games.

I didn't think Paradox still had it in them to put something this good out, so bully for them for sticking the landing on this.

This is unironically the best game ever made. Give Tarn your money.

So after a few hours of playing I can definitely say I'm enjoying this. All the core elements of a city builder/resource manager are there and they flow pretty well together. After a few hours I've only just hit the Mesolithic tech level, so progression seems to be at a pretty reasonable pace, though I do hope that the management side of things ramps up so that the late game doesn't feel empty.

Also there's some QoL stuff and UI polishing that the game could do with, but on the whole it's a solid game well worth its pricetag.

Early Access Review
Game looks sweet, booted her up and no matter what settings I change it runs at 1 FPS. I'm running an i7 6700K @4gHz with 8 cores, 64 gigs of DDR 4, and two 1080s in SLi.

I'll revisit this review once the game becomes playable.

$8 for a DLC that literally only adds pictures? No traits, no new events. Literally just pictures. Why do I fall for this every time?
