There isn't much to be said that hasn't been said already - Hi-Rez made more than a few mistakes when it comes to Realm. But then why do I recommend the game? Well my experience goes as follows:
I began playing in June of 2018, just like everyone else did and the game was a blast, this was clear as the game was racking up tens of thousands of concurrent players and even hundreds at its peak. The game had massive community tournaments with massive prize pulls and a massive audience, the game itself coupled with these tournaments attracted many big names to the game, such as Ninja, Shroud, Summit1g, etc, which is part of the reason the game was so popular for its short life.
But not soon after this, I think it was in July or August, just a month or two after the game's release, Hi-Rez made their first mistake in introducing a more prominent RNG aspect to the game in the form of legendaries dropping from normal chests, many people, myself included, did not like this, and so luckily this was only uploaded to the PTS and was never put in the normal game. Sadly it was not over here and just a few weeks after this initial attempt, they tried again, except they ignored the community this time and brought it over to the normal game anyways.
This caused the first major drop in players.
After seeing their player count fall, Hi-Rez still decided to make an even worse decision. There were a few things that made this game unique and different from other battle royale games; abilities, forges and possibly the most important, classes. So what was done? They removed them, they removed classes. (They of course reintroduced them in a later update, but in a very different format)
Cheers to the remaining half of the playerbase.
After all of this, all the big names had left the game, with only a few, maybe not even a few, left.
Following this, months of more poor decisions, but a few good ones too, the game got to a better place, and it's currently still in that place.
The playerbase is non-existent and the game's regular updates have gone from semi-regular to maybe bi-monthly at best, but despite this all, I'm still here, and I still enjoy it; and I'll hopefully continue to do so.
Maybe it doesn't make much sense for me to still enjoy the game, especially considering I didn't say anything positive about the game in this review, but it's fun, and that's all that matters.

I have 1200hrs on this game now and I can say it is amazing, with frequent updates and a community that isn't that toxic. Unturned is a really addictive game, when me and my friends first got the game we would log onto a server and would think that the colt was the best gun in the game. Within our few first days we knew the basics, but no gun statistics, we thought the colt was the best, because it one shot zombies in the head... To this day I know almost everything about every gun and this game still has a long way to go, so give a hand to Nelson for making such an amazing game on Untity (Nelson was 16 or 17 when he made the game!)

So it's now two and a half years later, in these last two and a half years, I have gotten two and half times the amount of hours I had previously and hit three thousand hours just yesterday, consistent, hey?
Maybe the game isn't as great as it used to be, I've got all the complaints all the other 'older' players have - not enough vanilla servers, too many kit PvP/creative servers, too many "10x loot" servers, too many little kids. But honestly, remembering what the game was, makes me forget about these things, it's still an incredible game and going forward I'm sure it still will be.

However, something I find rather irritating is the amount of people calling the game dead; I have never heard such an incorrect statement about this game - it doesn't have the player base it used to have, but eleven thousand concurrent players at 'low hours'? I don't think that's dead.
You could argue it's just not what it used to be, and that's undoubtedly correct, but again, it's not dead. Calling the game dead is what is going to kill it, if everyone were to just act as they did three years ago, with the same passion for the game, we will continue to attract new players and restore the game to its previous state of "glory", but that's not going to happen; just because you don't enjoy the game anymore in its current state, doesn't mean it's dead.

I might only have played this game for 40hrs, but I can say it's an amazing game. Alot of people hate it, because they aren't intelligent enough to read the store page where it says it's still in alpha. A few complaints I have about the game is that animals can run through rocks and bases, but so what, Garry will patch that soon enough and that it takes forever to load into a server, but otherwise it's an amazing game!
