Alright. This game gets a lot of stick. Does it desereve it? I don't really think so.

The majority of people complain that it lacks content - in comparison to the Legacy versions it does.
That's because the developers have gone and built a brand new engine for the current release.
This is something I think a lot of people seem to forget. The devs brought themselves back to Stage 1 so that they could create a game that they envisioned, in an new, modern engine that they could tweak easily.

I also think some people don't fully comprehend the sheer scope and effort required to create a new game engine. There were complaints that things weren't happeining fast enough in the months before the first stress test release, and from what I read both on the Status Reports and in various Forum/Reddit posts, the devs were flat out on this engine, getting it to a build that they could release to us.

Was this engine maybe released a bit too early? I would say both yes and no.
Yes because there were a lot of missing features initially - for example, leaning was only implemented there a few weeks back. It was definitely lacking in content.
No becasue the devs released it early such that they could see what bugs we as players encountered vs their own internal testing environment. One thing we found out very quickly was that the servers were not up to scratch for the new engine, especially when there were a lot of players in a concentrated area. This method of testing meant that we, as players, were able to provide the devs with feedback about various bugs and broken features, some of which they were unaware of.

As it stands now, there is still a lot to do with the game. It is still missing a lot of the guns from 0.62 Legacy, and a lot of weapon attachments too. But the devs have said they are going to continue working on it and releasing new content under the Wednesday Maintenance Schedule.

Is releasing a 1.0 build this year a good idea? Probably not.
The game, as much content as is in it already, is still missing a lot. Things still need a lot of tweaking. It works as it is, and it does work well, but I would like to see more stability in the game, and more content (in the likes of more vehicles/vehicle spawns, and the addition of more primary guns) before a full 1.0 release.

The game still has an active playerbase, which is awesome to see. The community servers are pretty amazing too, I've spent a lot of my recent time enjoying The Village.

BUT and this is a big but - find friends to play with. The game is OK as a lone player, but having even just one person by your side is great. I have met some amazing people in DayZ, and they remain my friends to this day.

UPDATE 1 Dec 19: Game is still making good progress. Vehicles are in and (mostly) work. Lots of new guns in. Lots of new mods developed which honestly improve on the basegame tenfold. Definitely worth a shot if the game is on sale.

UPDATE 26 Nov 20: Game still alive and well, we got Livonia now and in a few days (hopefully) we get Namalsk. Bears are pretty damn fierce so watch your ass! Vehicles still not performing well on servers with a high pop, so dont use them if you dont want to die. Gunplay is still pretty good, and even modded guns feel pretty solid and reliable.
Definitely pick up when on sale, at full price it is still not worth it.

Tl;dr: Game plays well, Game is very pretty, new stuff will take time to be added, 1.0 this year not good idea, find friends to play with - community servers are a good start. Oh, there's now modding tools. Get it on sale too.
