This game is a gateway to gambling - it made me understand the feeling that the gamblers get with each victory and each loss. Made me understand their mindset.

The protagonist is the "literally me" equivalent for evil girls (I stole her hairstyle), and the killer feature of the entire game, since it would be infinitely less charismatic without her, but still devilishly stylish. Every character and environment oozes with quality that can be seen only in the Cyberpunk genre - a pretty beat-up genre right now, in the end of the 21st century. Regardless of that, I was surprised to see how modern and caffeinated it feels.

This is a world of overworked addicts, a very straightforward prediction of near future through the amazing world-building puzzles and it really only captured the highest tip of an iceberg in the first available chapters that satiated my curiosity just enough, making me go "damn, this is the *now*, not the fictional future" with its great writing and smart humor. The way all characters interact with each other is quite entertaining and isn't as crazy as other games' casts like Danganronpa or Ace Attorney. I am a person that gives voices to characters while reading a visual novel. A few lines of dialogue and a look at the visual design of a character is enough to imagine the perfect voice, which is an amazing feat for a game with no voice acting.

Gameplay-wise, the mechanics should be more refined and polished. No spoilers here: There was a moment during a court hearing that required a presentation of evidence to completely destroy the schemes of the bad guy. Logically, I understood what the game wanted me to show but I had three whole evidence cards that technically touched the same point I was trying to make, and the protagonist even used that evidence to slowly "approach" to that bullet point only for the game to punish me for not choosing one of the three obviously related cards.

Other mini-games are not very clear in what they want the player to do. One of them gave you an amount of time to choose an evidence card to object to the witness testimony, but the game doesn't tell you that you only have around 10 seconds to actually present the evidence - and you can't look at your hand when the witness is testifying. You basically forget what's in your arsenal by the time the testimony has ended. A little annoying to me, personally. I was so immersed in the game's world my average attention span reflected that of the city's inhabitants, I guess.

So far I am in love with this game. It's edgy in all the right ways, in the best possible way. Chapter 0 is a must-read to someone who loves short murder mystery novels, 9/10 for me. Chapter 1 is a little bit more crazy and is obviously setting up the foundation for future stories, it reminded me a lot of Ace Attorney character dynamics which is pretty sweet - 7/10, it felt less... thrilling, yet still gripping.

\\\

In the end, if you are a lover for toxic yuri, if you had an obsession with Detroit: Become Human back in the days of 2018, if you like dangerously hot women and men, and you enjoy a little bit of edge in your games - what are you waiting for? Episode 0 is free, play it already. You'll ask for more.

I should've written this review a long time ago but never really came to it. There will be SPOILERS to this game, but you won't see any specifics.

I played this game for 80 hours at the time of this review and still have not achieved a single win. See, Cogmind is a curious and a truly unique roguelike with an interesting difficulty curve. It all starts with you getting your Core and parts being blasted by enemy bots at the deepest level of this weird sci-fi industrial complex. You get used to it, eventually, you learn that you don't actually need to destroy the bots - you embrace your inner Snake from Metal Gear Solid series and finally get to the Factory floor. Your Core and parts get blasted again. Over and over and over again.

Once you understand the unspoken (sometimes clearly spoken!) rules of this world, escaping stops being so hard. You figure out a Stealth build, flying away from all your problems, scrambling said problems' CPUs with an ECM, eventually getting to the exit. It becomes boring, so you decide to do a little bit of research into what the hell is going on here. You start asking questions: Who am I? What's all this, why am I here? What is this weird bot at the start of the game?

To answer these questions, you decide to explore the additional levels, the "branches" like caves and mines. You get your parts blasted over and over and over again, AGAIN. Suddenly you realize that some of these branches are even more guarded than the exit! That means you are not the protagonist here. But who said you cannot become one? Yes, it will require a lot of knowledge and intelligence. The cogs in your mind will need to start moving faster.

The world of this game is the most responsive world I've ever seen in a videogame. Almost every action of the player is accounted for by the game's inhabitants. It creates a lot of truly fun moments. One moment you might be running from a team of 6 relentless enemy grunts, breaking through the walls and suddenly realizing that the Complex's engineer just saved you by repairing that one wall tile, blocking off the pursuers and giving you space to get to safety. The other moment your system might become a bit corrupted because you took a risk and attached a corrupted rocket launcher to your system. Later you will, of course, forget to detach that part and blow up a poor member of a friendly faction of 30+ bots, starting a big fight you have no chance of winning. The game is filled with such small moments.

In fact, at first you won't even notice these small moments. Those would be your mistakes. The game does not steamroll you - you steamroll yourself. It never outright kills you, for each mistake there are several winning options. Understanding this world will be like opening a third eye. And with that eye, the game becomes so much deeper. Playing Cogmind stops being "gaming", it becomes art. Pulling off stuff many people can't do, experiementing with the builds and hundreds of fun items, creating an army of brainwashed bots, making impossible weapons... All of this makes Cogmind a high-end source of fun. All of the decisions you make are methodical, because if they aren't - you lose. That is what I like about this game.

Finishing off this review, I just want to note how welcoming the community of this game is on the Roguelikes Discord server. If you are struggling with the game, more experienced players will be delighted to learn about the situation you're in and help you. The best part of it is that the Developer himself enjoys playing his own game and talking to the players. Kyzrati goes out of his way to bring Quality of Life changes to the game, the interface itself is highly adjustable to the player's needs and you can literally ping him anytime you want with anything you want.

This game is definitely not for everyone. But everyone can enjoy it in some way. I have nothing else to say.

I wish humans eyes didn't need to blink every once in a while. I must not blink. Blinking is harmful... for your highscore.

First impression. Our whole squad of 3 guys died to a single cheeky terrorist doing a funny flank. He used a shotgun and killed us all while we were spooked by sudden gunfire from the door we were scouting with a camera. Added one of my teammates to a friend-list after that.

Must play
